curious if anybody knows which 2 batteries are the house batteries on a freightliner and which 2 are for the starter? I often have to go and rescue co workers up north in sub zero temperatures and I want to make sure I`m getting them the most power that I can when attempting to jump start them.
there are 2 large positive cables coming into the battery box and not sure which ones are for the starter?
sorry for the rookie question just a first year apprentice.

All 4 batteries are connected in parallel?
4 positive battery posts connected to a common cable.
Same with the negative?
It shouldn't matter which cable or post you put the jumper cables on.

Doesn’t matter how you look at it or connect it. It’ll charge them all and still start since it’s freezing let it sit for 5 10 minutes get a nice charge with your revs up. And then have him crank it.
Also if by some reason you have trouble. And you have two sets of cables you can run straight from your alternator to his batteries.
If all that fails.
Leave your truck running take out two of your batteries ( whichever one don’t have the ecm wire going to it) take yours out and put it on his truck and fire his up then just swap your batteries back. Trucks can run on alternator power only. If the ecm has power.
You won’t fail

A lot of Trucks have a positive jumping post under the hood. Usually mounted on the frame. Then clamp negative to frame. If both Trucks have them even better. No sparks near ( possibly ) bad batteries. Safe practice method, I believe, is hook up dead battery first, good battery second. Grounding to frame, to avoid sparks.

I know 2 are for the house battery's and 2 of them that connect directly to the starter.
I know when I charge them they will all receive power but correct me if i`m wrong isnt it best to connect to the ones that the starter wire is connected to rather that connecting to one that if far down the line # 4 battery so if one battery is shot all of my current can get to the starter the shortest path? -
Since they’re all connected together, they’re all going to the starter. There’s 2 hot wires, to carry enough juice.Got to connect them somewhere. It doesn’t matter. I’ve thought through the same thing as you. When jumping, power is going to all batteries that are low, and to starter, when engaged. I Usually have to wait a bit, as much as 20 minutes. To get enough juice into batteries to help my car supply enough juice to crank the Truck. Even jumped my Dads Truck once with a motorcycle, took forever. But another Truck, along with thick gauge cables, will crank it right up.Because it has enough juice, I guess 1 dead battery and 1 good jump, would be quicker than 4 dead batteries and a jump, especially if cables on Truck are old, or one of the batteries is shorted out. Hooking to the battery running to the starter would be better, due to resistance in the bad battery. A lot of Company Trucks used to have 1 battery dedicated to the starter. So if Driver ran batteries down while parked, Truck would still start. I don’t know what all is involved, for the battery to charge, yet only be drawn down by the starter. I imagine a selinoid of some sort. But I like the idea. I’m not good with electrical at all, Lol. But I think you’re right, for the same reasons, jumping straight to the selinoid or starter works immediately. Current flows to the path of least resistance. The closer to starter, the better.

I notice allot of these freightliner cascadias have 2 large positive wires comming into the battery box one goes to a group of 2 in parallel and the other one goes to a group in parallel.
any idea which one goes to the starter and which ones are the house batteries?Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

Cascadia has 4 batteries and all of them wired parallel. 2 positive wires are coming out. One for starter and one for truck. 2 negative wires are coming out. one for start and one for frame rail. if one battery will have short Inside it will drain all batteries over night.
