Help! Anyone with a classic. I have a 2001 Classic. Replacing the ends of shift rod. My truck has the long threaded rod on top that connects to arm on firewall and a short threaded rod that’s basically a small tie rod end on bottom that connects to transmission arm.Just went to pick up part only to have the wrong end having been ordered. According to the Dealers picture the “ball joint end should be on top at firewall and straight eyelet end on transmission side. That means my clutch rod assembly is upside down or backwards. I’m almost positive my last truck 99 was the same as my 2001. Either the dealers diagram is wrong or my set up is wrong any help would be appreciated. I’m home if working I could ask someone to take a look at their set- up. Thanks

I would put the new parts on the same way the old parts came off.

It really depends on if it clears everything during full travel. The 2000-2002 I used to work on had them at the top. Which is easier to adjust for the clutch brake when needed.
So as long as it clears and makes no other contact either way, it’s really up to you.

Is this what you talking about, can you tell I replaced mine not long ago?... and you shouldn't adjust your clutch brake by this rod anyways.

    Good luck!

That's some good work there. Nice pictures

Anytime anyone adjusted my clutch, they come in from underneath the raised tractor with a large tool into the bottom of the transmission where there is a open slot for that type of work.

I generally like my clutch pedal loose when hanging at the top. So that the clutch brake is in the bottom half when depressed far enough to engage it.

I agree that a linkage is just that. A linkage. It's not something you can use to adjust anything really. You would break it.

Thank you very much for the pictures. That’s exactly how mines set up.Its just a fluke that Freightliners illustrations on their computer shows the ends in reverse positions. I first had trouble when the bottom one broke, had to rig up with hose clamp.Got the part adjusted clutch good to go.A while later broke shift rod, had welded adjusted clutch.Thought it was just a fluke. About a year later broke again, got it welded again real good. Some time later the threads got jammed that is skipped the threads and again hit clutch and nothing thought it had broke again. And that’s when I finally figured it out.The problem is the cab bushings on front were wore out.while I still had free play not enough and after hitting a bad pothole on I 65 it happened. So now just want everything new b4 I get clutch done. Clutch has 1.3 ml miles it’s a reman but has done a goo job.I pulled a broken spring out a while back.Yeah I know how that sounds!!!! But I’ve been babying it along. Anyway check those bushings.Ive replaced all bushings except for front springs their the rubber greaseless type,I’m sure their shot.Never kept a truck this long still learning,Thanks again maybe I’ll post some pics when I get rod repaired, also working on a better solution to the cab air ride valve rod, tired of plastic junk. But thanks again that’s the first time I used forum for a problem

I realize you can’t adjust clutch with the linkage. But proper free play is adjusted in linkage if for some reason it was off after a clutch adjustment was done.Normally that would never be an issue. But if the linkage ends get wore out you end up with what feels like free play But is only loose linkage.Like I said I’m still learning, right now I’m pretty sure my clutch is out of room for adjustment. Thanks for all the comments.Lesson here is check linkage as part of clutch adjustment.
