Ive been looking at trucks lately, and was wondering if a freightliner classic xl would be something good to start in?

Not a good truck for a new driver to start in. Really poor turning radius which will get a new driver in trouble in tight areas.

"Start in" How long have you been driving? Its turning radius is no worse than any other 'hood' but it is a consideration. Parts are cheaper than Volvo and parts and service are easier to come by. Not the most fuel efficient but can be nudged into the mid 6's. Probably got a Detroit in it, it is a known quantity, no surprises if looked after.

    KMac Thanks this.

Could be a good starter truck if it's dependable. It won't get good fuel mileage if it has a big engine- keep that in mind while remembering that the fail rate for first time O/O's is something like 97%. You could be successful with it- if you could drive it slowly and kept your mind on business and on making a profit.

The Frtl XL wasn't ever built to be a first truck. If you can't resist the urge to drive fast and idle a lot, you'll be in that 97% group.

I was thinking either the classic xl or the freightliner century. Which is more dependable and would be the better choice for OTR?

But i ran with the century , no problems with it, didnt pull good on the hills, downshift alot depending on the ant hill. mine had the 60 detroit , 10 speed , company truck , good truck although i must say, plenty room inside too.

Yea the more space inside is a big plus. Plan to become an O/O within the next 2 years, just tryna figure out what would be the best truck to begin in
