We are a small carrier and are considering starting a brokerage side. Can anyone offer recommendations, warnings or experiences about brokers' sub-agent programs?
Thanks,

That was said tongue in cheek.
In office employee? Less problems, more control.
Out of office contractor? Set firm standards and hold to them. And they will try to pressure you all the time to let "this one slide" or I may loose the account.
How are you going to pay? Commission? Salary+? When loaded? When MT? When invoiced? When paid? Any holdbacks?
You have money/finance for advances/quick pay/30 day pay? Pretty easy for a decent agent to sell 50-60K or more before you ever get payed for the first load.
Protecting accounts for either side is an exercise in futility. Too many legal ways for either side to get around it. Any customer that wants to move either way and is prohibited you alienate them.
You have company drivers? Think how hard it is to get a good one. Same for agents. Some are great, some are a PITA. A PITA that makes you good money is hard to let go.(Drinking helps)
Be prepared to cover losses that aren't insured. Even if it is many will take whats owed to pay for it and you wait on the insurance. Don't ever count on a carrier to pay up. The most for sure that you will get is what you owe them. A customer that holds up money until a problem is fixed/payed for gets expensive. -
Perhaps my post was inexactly worded or interpreted incorrectly. We are interested in signing up as a sub-agent for a larger brokerage in lieu of getting our own bond/brokerage authority.
Does anyone have any experience/advice about the various options? -
Usually those brokers sign on 'agents' to get loads for their own trucks, learn your customers, have access to your truck following. Just like any other business, there are good ones to associate with, and then there are crooks. Do research on the company you are thinking about hitching up with, and keep your cards close to your vest. Some have been known to steal your business right out from under you.
