I am looking to obtain my CDL so I recently visited a local school. They have told me that because I am unemployed/underemployed I can apply for a federal Workforce Investment Act grant which will pay for 100% of my training, materials, medical exam, and DMV fees. They say thay have done this many times. This is a grant, not a loan so nothing to pay back. Anyone done this? Too good to be true?

I applied for it.... But I have a degree and live in a welfare corrupt state so I didn't qualify...... Good luck to you though. If you are willing to travel a bit, Roehl has a good affordable program.

Yes, it's true so go for it. You're spending your own money; you paid taxes when you were employed.
While in the school, get all the endorsements, TWIC, passport so you can start your new career making good money.Google for nearest TWIC office.
Prepare early by studying the "CDL Practice Tests" accessed at the top of this page.
You will need:
Original Birth Certificate
Original Social Security Card - not laminated.CaliforniaJoe Thanks this. -
Everything Chinatown said is true........... What part of Cali are you in?

Northern, bay area. I have my appointment for tomorrow. Applicants must attend some seminars on resume writing and interviewing skills first.
I was totally expecting to have to borrow $5000 for this..so this is awesome, if I get approved.knuckledragger and Chinatown Thank this. -
If the WIA program doesn't work out & you decide to borrow $5000.00 for private school, then check with the high annual pay companies and make sure they hire from the school.
Here's an example from one of the best paying companies:
TRIMAC Transportation. We require our drivers to have at least 1 year of Tractor/Trailer experience or have graduated from an approved driving school. We accept students from PTDI and CVTA certified schools along with several other schools that meet Trimac standards.Last edited: Feb 10, 2015

Nothing is free, you can thank all of us tax paying workers for the 'free' training from Uncle Sam. Not bashing the program and support people without work to take advantage of training to get back on their feet. I just hate government programs being touted as free.

Don't hold your breath Joe,there's probably hidden fees somewhere.Just because you apply for this doesn't mean you'll get approved. They will need some kind of paperwork.
