    After looking at all the Wisconsin area schools I chose FVTC 10 wk CDL A. The price was better then the states private for profit schools and required more hours to complete. I'm glad I did they are rated as one of the best in the US. Finishing next week and have plenty of pre-hires to chose from. Requirements to complete are
    1) Obtain Class A with N and T endorsements
    2) Complete WDDC workshop (commercial vehicle skid pad training)
    3) Complete the Entry Level Training expectations.
    4) Obtain aprox 1,000 miles behind the wheel
    5) Meet all necessary competency requirements. ie backing/ docking and live docking

    It was a great experience the staff is top notch and most instructors are state and fed certified 3rd party examiners. Can't wait to start my new career. Keep the dirty side down and be safe all! :biggrin_25525:

    Thanks ladyfire! Also about $90.00 for books etc and $120 for physical. Students also don't need to come into class with Instructional Permits once physicals are done and fed med cards obtained the first week and a half is mostly lecture based helping students to prep for written IP tests and getting introduced to equipment etc.

    I have been there several times for several different courses. In my never to be so humble opinion and if its Wisconsin as the determination, FVTC is THE best choice.

    Being a student there also, ( I just finished my 6th week ) I can concur that the program is excellent. One thing that FVTC does that sets them apart is that once the students recieve their CDL ( usually around week 5-6 ) they are allowed to ride in the truck with the newer students that have obtained their Instruction permit in lieu of an instructor. This allows the students to get alot more time behind the wheel hence a lot more experience. If you have the opportunity to go there DO IT! By paying for your own training you will not be indebted to a company that trained you.

    Just wondering. If two "students" are driving the truck, who is teaching who? If all you are doing is getting windshield time, why are you paying for that rather than being with the fleet trainers and getting paid for it?

    This is the main difference in some of the long term schools.. If you have the time to go that long with no pay, by all means do so. BUT there is absolutely no way that it can prepare anyone much better for the whole training process in real world conditions.

    So let me see if I got the "Bargin" right. You paid roughly $2800.00 for a 10 week training program in which you are telling me the last 5 or so weeks you don't even have an instructor in the vehicles with you. Really? In contrast the Wisconsin private schools charge between $4000.00 to $5000.00. They are three week programs, lets call it four weeks with testing. The Private schools are also approved by carriers for pre-hire of students. You are going to a tech college for an extra six weeks. You still will have to go through the same OJT at the fleets as the person coming from the private school. That being said, the person coming from the private school will get into the fleet and start making a fleet paycheck six weeks sooner. Since most fleet pay for drivers after OJT go for between $600 - $750.00 per week, you are giving up, on the low side $3600.00 in divers pay. Add that to the $2800.00 you paid for the course and that bargin cost you $6400.00. Most Wisconsin fleets offer tuition reimbursement so if you stay with them the cost is going to be paid back to you anyway. The private school would have cost you maybe $2100.00 less and you would have had instructors with you at all times. Was it still a bargin?
