I am doing PM on my trailer today. I want to remove the hub caps to inspect the bearings, but I am out of the hub cap gaskets. Can I use the form a gasket or silicone gasket maker on these?

I never play this game. I use genue gaskets, cheap part.... Leaking fom hub oil is too expencive thing, just imagine bearing cost! and do not forget about fire danger

Yeah you can, it works fine for hubcaps and axle flanges.

I agree,i played that game once,
NEVER AGAIN. I ended up spending more $ topping off with hub oil due to a leak(didn't get a good seal with perma-gasket) than if i had just went ahead and bought the dang gasket.

you can use just silicone for the hub but make sure the hub cap isnt warped from over tightening the bolts. or it WILL leak. but it is better and peace of mind to use a gasket with a thin layer of silicone on both sides of gasket.

Caution: Silicone applied to the gasket can act as a lubricant and split and squeeze the gasket out when the bolts are tightened.

Often, the problems encountered with silicone usage are failure to clean and dry the surfaces and the buildup or accumulation of silicone in the bolt holes not allowing the bolts to fully tighten the hubcap to the hub.

i agree 100% thats why i use a thin layer, too much and yeah it will force the gasket out if the bolts are over tightened.

A gasket is always better, but silicone can work for some things where there is no pressure on the sealed component if the silicone is used properly. All things can turn out bad when procedures aren't followed, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's all bad.

Thanks for all the replies. I normally use gaskets but it was Memorial Day and all the parts houses were closed. I noticed that all the caps had oil seeping where the sight glass meets the housing. So I did my inspection and went to the parts house today and got 4 new caps w/gaskets. Thanks again everyone.
