I've got a 87 ford ltl 9000 with a 13 spd and a 3406 b model cat motor. Ew on truck and pup with log loader is 35 k. Going 55 it runs at 1800 rpm at 65 around 2000 rpm this seems high or is it normal. I believe pump is stock. Just had o rings in the bonnet caps replaced had fuel leak. I've built harleys and pickup diesel motors but these big truck engines are all new too me. It seems doggy loaded getting upto speed pulling hills ect. What should i ck and why. Maybe just need to turn pump up. Going to install boost gauge and pyro gauge but i can hear the turbo wind up so assuming it's working. Also my speedo is,jumpy and then it just reads way high it stops adding miles how do i ck it or maybe the speedo sending unit ?? Any info or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, craig

Is your 13 speed a direct or overdrive trans? What is your diff gear ratio? What tire are you running?
If your bonnet orings were leaking, it's a good idea to change the engine oil.
On the power complaint, I would start by running the overhead and replacing the fuel lines, they could be swelled/restricted and/or sucking some air.
Remove your speedo sensor and clean the tip as it is magnetic and will collect metal, then your final adjustment going back together should be 3/4 to 1-1/4 turns out from the tip touching the gear.rjones56 Thanks this. -
Trans is a rto 11613-14613 how do i tell if it a overdrive or not. Diff is a rockwell tag says 410 ratio. It ran same before and aft the o rings. Had k&s fuel injection from weston do them while i waited they did all 6 and said it came apart good and went together good only 1 was leaking but if one leaks prob matter of time till another or with my luck anyways. Just over 300 for them with o rings included. The speedo sender is on the back of trans where the drive shaft slides in ? 2 wires coming out of it runs upto another sensor on top of trans ?? Im use to working on harleys, pickups, automobiles, ect. I am determined to do and learn this truck thou. The fuel lines don't look to bad. In gona ck with previous owner to see when they had overhead done last. I think truck is stock pump never turned up,the head was redone at one time. Where do i want to put probe for pyro and boost ? Thanks for the help.

RTO is overdrive. A direct would be an RT.
The 4.10 gearing is what is winding the engine, but most likely necessary for off road use.
You really cannot judge the fuel lines by looking or testing, they should be replaced.
Adjusting the valves on a Cat is even easier than a Harley.
The pyro thermocouple goes after the turbo. -
So its normal to run that rpm with that ratio I take it. Yeah it is set up to go in the woods so I guess its geared low. Pulls like a old mule just don't think about running a race. Easy to do the overhead sounds like something should be able to figure out just need the valve gap settings. Must be like a four wheeler engine set the gap at .003 intake and .008 on exhaust due to expansion when warmed up just made those numbers up. Is there someplace I can find the settings and procedure for my engine. Do I just POP the valve covers no Jake on this engine, was considering installing a exhaust brake.?? The PYRO goes within 6 inches of clamp aft turbo correct ? How about boost gauge. ? Was thinking about getting a fuel pressure gauge also. Talked to previous owner and fuel lines original,as well as turbo, not sure about overhead but doesn't remember it being done also there's a new muffler under cab but not the original stock type would that affect anything?? Is that the speedo sender on the back end of trans about 2in long hex shape to get a wrench on it. ?? Would turning up the pump gain me much any opinion's on that. ?? Thanks got my work for tomorrow now.

Yes, trucks that run off road aren't geared for best fuel mileage for highway driving, plus when you haul heavy with lower horsepower/torque engines the lower gearing allows the engine to work in setup.
Might be to your advantage to tackle 2 or 3 things at a time as your list is getting very long. Maintenance items first, then add ons and modifications. -
Yep one thing at a time. Found procedure for overhead lastnite. Exhaust has a port for the PYRO ,the fuel lines look like not big deal to change out. Gota figure out boost gauge location drill and tap it. Is there any distance requirements for the plug hole on that ? There's a steel tube between engine and the turbo outlet tube can I put my plug there ? Then the speedo sender I think is on the tail piece of the trans found a post saying should read like 267 ohm's do you know if thats correct ? This truck reminds me of my 48 panhead old but keeps on going always a little something to fix, tweak,or add on ! I'll keep on fixing till I hope I get to the adding new stuff. First think is the speedo 1 less thing for the cops to hassle me over. Nice to know how fast I'm going without using the speed app on my smart phone.
-
There should be a pipe plug already existing on the intake manifold for your manifold pressure/boost gage. No drilling or tapping required.
Yes 267 ohms give or take. You've identified speedo sender on the trans output. -
Thanks bender. I'm gona test it tonite pull it out clean it up reset it. Not bad if its shot parts guy said like 74 bucks. Lot better than the 389 for speedo itself. Cheaper than Harley parts lol. Hd stands for hundred dollars or several hundred dollars for a part sometimes. I got three of them it adds up. But I guess if I had 3 trucks it would add up fast too. I'll look for a port for boost ,but I didn't see one. Where would it most Likly be on the turbo outlet or motor side ? Thanks again appreciate the info.
-
No biggie. Cleaning them and setting air gap cures many of them and no parts needed. I've had a couple HD's, but I don't hang quite as good as I once did, so as not to risk playing the fool I let them go. The plug will be on the intake manifold.
log trucker Thanks this.
