A hotspot can get pricey (I had a recruiter recommend this) but I've seen YouTube videos that promote a WiFi booster that is a one time price? Any personal experiences out there of which is a better bet?

I had a hotspot for a limited time when I was first running OTR 5 years ago. They're redundant at best, and a waste of money at worst. Most smartphones nowadays can be used as personal hotspots, so there's no need to buy a separate one unless you have multiple people using it at once.
A WiFi/Signal booster would probably be more useful to you, especially in areas where service is sporadic or spotty. Lot of those out west. I wouldn't spend the money on one until I knew for a fact that it would benefit me. Where I run nowadays there's very few places where I haven't been able to get service. If you do get one, make sure you get one that's compatible with your phone and service provider.

I've come across this & seen YouTube videos on it - amazon review seem positive (some could be paid for by company of course) anyone have experience with this, it's not cheap but at least its a one time thing & not a monthly attack - WeBoost Drive 4G X-OTR around $500.00

A hotspot and booster are two different things. All the booster does is boost the signal you have (hence the name), it doesn't give you service of any kind. You still need service from either a hotspot or phone. The $500 WeBoost you are looking at will work to boost your signal, but it isn't a service itself, so, you're not going to get away from a monthly fee for internet service. You will still need one of the providers for that.

thanks for pointing that out - you need a cellphone carrier service in both scenarios - I have unlimited on both cell/data but data can get hairy & choppy at times for things like streaming, internet, so a strong WiFi signal comes in handy but Yes, thanks for the clarity - it must of been my potent white drink that got me cloudy:eek:

Just tether your phone to your laptop. I did that and I was able to do gaming online without any lag.

Wi-Fi is almost useless at truck stops. The best setup I have found is Verizon. Because they have the most coverage. It usually pretty fast. Straight Talk at Walmart has pretty good deal $55 for unlimited talk and texted and 60GB of hight speed internet. All on your phone. I never really tried using phone as HOT SPOT. So Straight Talk might not let that work. I don't think they can tell because you can Bring Your Own Phone to Staright Talk. You just need a phone that has Verizon bands and SIM card from Straight Talk. You can get any phone company you want on Straight Talk you just need a phone that has the antennas. I got a cheap MotoG phone because it come with every antenna on the phone. So I can run Verizon or AT&T or T-Mobile. Not sure about Sprint. I don't think Straight Talk has deal with Sprint. So you probably can't get on the Sprint side. Straight Talk sell a SIM card kit.

The only time a boostèr would do avything at all is if you are using truckstop wifi

If your using you phone or a hotspot for Internet in the truck WHY would you need to boost the wifi when everything your using is in the

I use a Verizon jet pack (hotspot) for my tv, ps3, ps4 and laptop with no problems
