I have a friend that's wanting to gain some tanker experience. He currently drives for a auto parts hauling outfit, but wants into tankers. He doesn't have enough experience to come over to Linde.
He was asking me about getting a few years in with some food grade hauler, but the idea of a surge has him scared.
I told him that almost all of the tankers are smoothbore. Maybe I am missing a segment of that side of the industry. I know almost nothing of surge, since CO2 doesn't move that much. The only time I can feel it move is when I'm down to around a half a load. And only then if I brake hard or sloppy shifting. Even then it's not like what I have saw other products do.
Also, how does the automatic transmission work when pulling a smoothbore? I have never pulled an automatic. I was curious as to see if they helped or hurt with surging.
Thanks for reading. Comments or suggestions are welcome.
Gotta get this kid away from the world of door swingers and into tanker land. It's all rainbows and Golden Hershey's at least that's what I tell him !

How much experience does he have in a Class-8 truck?
If he has 6 mos. driving experience, tell him to look at A&R Logistics which is dry bulk, non-hazmat.

I was under the impression, most tankers have baffles, EXCEPT dairy products. With baffles, you'd have butter in the tank. The "surge" isn't something to be afraid of, just aware of. One finds out real quick how they handle and stop. I'd be more afraid of a reefer, and all those shenanigans, than a tank surge.

You're right. They've slowly creeped down to 6 mos. I made a big mistake by not going there. My former neighbor tried to recruit me and I didn't go. He was making $72K which is above the average there @ $65K.
    A&R Truck Driver Requirements
    • Have valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from their state of residence.
    • Have 6 months of recent, verifiable, tractor/trailer experience with a regulated carrier.
    • Must successfully pass a minimum 6-month DOT physical and pre-placement drug screen.
    • Have no DUI/DWI, impaired-driving or implied-consent convictions within the past 3 years.

That is incorrect. No food grade products have baffles. That includes many of the ingredients used in food prep. The reason is too many places for bacteria to hide, and it can't be cleaned thoroughly.

You are correct. No baffles in food grade. Automatic transmissions are not ideal for smooth bore tankers. Transmission doesn’t know what to do with the surge.

The wash cycle takes as long or longer than the unloading.

I'm not very happy with the auto with my baffled fuel tank.

Same with chemical tankers. About the only baffled tanks out there would be petroleum tankers. Ie Fuel, and oil.
