I got a question i can not find the answers too online, inside the fmcsa guidelines handbook, or from a mechanic at the TA. So asking all veteran truckers now. I have looked and looked and even under the rim section it does not say anything about rust in the fmcsa statue book about rusted rims.
My companies trailers look like dog :booty:.
Some times the rims are rusted so bad. That i can take a ball point pen on the inside of the rim where its pitting and scrape up metal shaving like im peeling a orange. Now I know that eventually there comes a point where the structural integrity will fail and out goes that air, and off comes that tire, so it’s really surprising to me that i have not been able to find any text or law about how much rust is allotted on the rim the tire is seated on. Has anyone got a ticket for excessive rust on a rim? Do you remember the citation number and the statue that leads to the subtext? I feel like since this is more of a common sense thing it might be untouched, however some companies, my company does not care how their equipment looks and are just stingy.:dontknow: With fuel prices I don’t blame them, but at some point it becomes high risk and unsafe. So what are the regs?

Cosmetics don’t matter. Is there an audible leak? Leaks bad, no leak drive on. If ugly was an O/S issue they couldn’t sell Volvos.

The way our local DOT determines excessive rust is if there's actual wastage of the wheel at any attach point, air leaks, or deformation of the surface attributable to rust.
That's word of mouth. It's what the DOT guy told me. We were on a job over on the coast hauling rock to a jetty and everything that wasn't painted rusted.
I don't know where to look for an actual regulation but if your equipment is unsafe just refuse to pull it. Better to get a new job than to get a ticket for their lousy equipment.

If large chunks of rust/scale were able to be knocked off with a pen, I'd be a little concerned. Just ugly because of surface rust, roll on.

    laaylor and bzinger Thank this.
