Anybody here work or has worked for a flooring distributor such as Shaw Floors or Mohawk? Just wondering how physically demanding the job may be. I recently had an interview at Shaw floors. Guy told me the rolls of carpet are unleaded by forklifts if the customer has a dock. If there is no dock, you use a winch. Anything that's on pallets you use an electric pallet jack. Was wondering if the the job ad description "must be able to lift 75 lbs a minimum of 50 times a day" is really true or not.

You will get a J hook that you turn and hook into roll of carpet and rope that hooks to fork/lift to pull to end of trailer with lift, on places that dont have a dock, by lifting 50 times they must be talking about back haul to some warehouse near plant that they pay lumpers to unload

If you're a local driver for Shaw...your basically an LTL P&D driver.

The physical aspect of the job MAY pertain to when you pick up returns from customers...most likely ceramic tiles. Customers or flooring install contractors may have ordered too much and you have to take them back as a return.

Ceramic tiles are palletized and you use the liftgate and electric pallet jack to unload the freight if the customer doesn't have a forklift or dock. 16 × 16 tiles can weigh up 4k pounds palletized. I had to deliver them manually with a pallet jack and they are HEAVY!!! It can put A LOT of stress on the liftgate. I had a tuck under liftgate and the weight of the pallet would cause the liftgate to bounce up and down like a swimming pool plank. I would also carry around bottles of transmission fluid to replace the hydraulic fluid that would leak out every time I delivered one of those HEAVY ### pallets. It should be a lot easier with an electric pallet jack. Shaw uses rail liftgates...which makes it A LOT easier to unload.

Carpets are usually unloaded with forklift poles. Usually they'll use a winch to drag the carpet back to the tailend if it's too far up in the nose. Here's a video of how carpets are unloaded....

Shaw is a good company to work for. I think they're the third largest private fleet and they're also a fortune 500 company and rated as one of the best companies to work for. Last I heard, pay is around $26-27 an hour...at least it is around my area. You can also go to Indeed.com and punch in Shaw Transport and read the reviews for Truck Driver.

    Good luck.
