I was talking to a hay producer who said I should consider taking my 45’x 102” flatbed and marry it up to a pup trailer and run Rocky Mountain Doubles. I live in Montana and have never ran doubles before.

There is a great fab welder here that could do the necessary fab work. Install Pintal hook, safety ring, etc on the back of my trailer etc.

    1. What states can I legally run considering the length limitations. Freeways appear to be good in most NW states (MT, ID, WY, ND, UT etc not sure about WA). I see them going by daily with lumber & hay between Mt & Idaho.

    2. Do I pull only a 20’ pup since my trailer is 45’.

    3. Where do you recommend I purchase a pup or have one made & what specs should I look for? Pup max Length? Tongue length?

    Thanks in advance....

Get one with a collapable tongue... You can then close it up and run "coupled short"... Or you can open it up and run it "stretched out"... Or set it anywhere in between. Go look at most any grain train on the road these days.

WA has a limit of 68 feet of trailer, so it limits you to a 20 foot pup. OR limits the front trailer to 40 feet. As for weight, WA OR ND 105,500 but I think you need 8 axles. OR has the ton mile tax, so it gets expensive to run over 98,000 lbs. When you purchase a Over Length permit for Montana, it also applies to Idaho and WA, AND it allows 14'6'' I believe. The extendable tongue for the drawbar is helpful. Also you can decide if you want a converter dolly and a semi trailer, or a pull trailer with a attached front axle on a pivot.
