I'm in the process of ordering some new 2" 40' ratchet straps. I've always used the flat hook type but was wandering if there's any real difference between the two. I should mention these are mainly only used when I haul shipping containers.

only differnece is how they hook on to your trailer,. flat worrks pretty good inles you have D rings then i would use the J hook
-
I don't have any D rings. Just curious if there was any other advantages from one to the other that I wasn't thinking about.
-
nope no real advantage/disadvatage between the 2. if you dont have d rings use what ever you like, price should be the same
-
The j hook style won't fit inbetween the bump rail, or through a pocket. To bulky.
I like the flat hook myself. Every once in awhile a flat hook will be a tight fit through a picket, or between the bump rail but that problem is easily solved with the smack of a hammer. -

Yes it'll reach. These are 30' 2" straps. Notice how the rear container is blocked up? It still reaches. -
I've ran into the scenario a few times where a owner op made a mistake and purchased 27' straps that wouldn't quit reach when blocked up. What I had them do, and have personally done myself in the past was lace a chain down the driver side of the trailer through the pockets and bump rail leaving slop in the area we wanted to hook a strap. Then we just pull the chain slop up to meet the strap and hook it to the chain, instead of the side of the trailer like we normally would. It works, and I've went through many scales and inspections with it like that, nobody ever questioned it. Lol
If you really didn't want to buy some more straps you could do the same. Myself I carry all 30' straps and even 4 40' straps. I've used the 40' straps many of times to straighten out shifted loads of pipe, and I use them to gut wrap the top of pipe loads also. They're pretty handy to have on the truck. -
Appreciate that. Thanks
flatbedcarrier Thanks this. -
