Being driving with this company 6 month and had my first accident in my trucking career.
Traveling down the highway and all the suddenly I hit the guard rail. It happened so fast. Based on damage of how the right steer tire was damaged, inside had more damage then outside I suspect maybe there was a tire failure.
Safety called me and said "that could be from hitting the guard rail, be honest, were you falling asleep or playing on the phone" . No I wasn't on the phone and I have properly rested. My log can show I had a more than 10 hours brake before shift and my medical have no sleep problem. We have camera on every truck but camera in my truck was not operating, and I was not aware.
What really happened? Was this really a tire problem or something else caused me to hit guard rail?
More importantly, will they fire me over this accident?
First accident and it is not small..... Will they fire me?

I’d go with hit foreign object on road. It cut the inside of the tire. Lost control and hit guard rail
Tmocha29, JSanborn103, D.Tibbitt and 9 others Thank this. -
Only you know what happened, and I expect you'll be fired. If something happened before hitting the guard rail, like that steer tire blowing, you'd have known first.
First thing you remember is hitting the guard rail.GYPSY65, firemedic2816, Oxbow and 7 others Thank this. -
How can any of us answer any of those questions? You were there, we don’t know what happened. Only your company will know if they’ll fire you. Was anyone hurt? Was cargo damaged? If not then maybe you’ll keep your job. Maybe they will fire you. Only they have the answer.

Looking at it one of two things happened. Either A: you hit the guardrail first in which case its an 80/20 chance you will be canned and a 100% chance of a giant black mark on the recordm or B: from the fact the damage is INSIDE the tire and looks like something pushed up into it. You hit something in the road and blew a tire which sent you into the guardrail. In which case its 20/80 chance of being fired.
The only reason the first is more likely is you would #### well know you blew a steer. When i was teaming with my dad we had one go that the shop had improperly put onto an already damaged rim (shop guy fessed up to using a bad rim so he didnt need to go haul out a new one when we found the "bad" marks inside it.) And they make a VERY distinct BOOM and drop. Only way you wouldnt have heard it is if you were distracted or had your sound system cranked so high your windows were in danger of blowing out.
Giving you the benifit of the doubt if it was the second then there is a decent chance you will get a major writeup and keep your job. They MIGHT fire you but even if they do our good buddy @Chinatown will have you in a new rig within 48 hours.TripleSix, Geekonthestreet, tscottme and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yeah, @Arctic_fox , looks like a sleepyhead incident. Either way, we'll keep him employed somewhere.
firemedic2816 and Siinman Thank this. -
There is no good reason to not know what was going on when you hit a guard rail. Your job is know what your truck is doing. You were doing something, what was it?
