I’ve had my authority for 9 months now and have been doing pretty well. But as we all know rates are dropping out pretty bad.
So what’s y’all’s advice for finding direct shippers? My game plan was to make a carrier packet and just drive around to different business and do my best to pick up some business.
Finding direct shippers??

Or why not be a broker and take 50-60% for doing nothing?

I hate middle men too, but it's not like brokers are useless. And if you think brokers are ignorant about trucking, wait until you start talking to shippers and receivers. -
I have found that me with one truck one trailer it’s not happening with most companies. Yeah I can get direct with smaller lumber mills. Their direct rates are garbage just like the load board. I actually have seen a big lumber yard load rate sheet then look on DAT and some brokers were offering higher rates on the same loads. I doubt the brokers are keeping 50% of the load. If a customer needs a load moved today and a broker was trying to keep that much the load wouldn’t move. The shippers have taken notice to all these new start up carriers that have came into the market in the last year and a half. They know most of these guys have big bills and they are collectively running the rates down. Speaking on flatbed freight. You can still get a decent rate but guys are snatching $2.25 a mile off the board as quick as it’s posted. If I were a shipper I’d be posting loads that cheap to. Those that know what they’re are worth and have a little cash on hand to ride this out are going to be good once these pop up fly by night cheap haulers go bankrupt. It’s going to happen quickly to at the rate these cheap loads are getting snapped up. If you’re using a dispatcher and he/she is trying to convince you that all loads are cheap, you need to fire them immediately. I speak on flatbed only……
