Is this a good forum to find out about current road conditions? I'm mainly interested in knowing about interstates that are rough and full of potholes, or areas where roads are under construction, so I can avoid them.

We are leaving soon on a road trip in an RV from New Hampshire to Tennessee. The last time we took that trip, a few months ago, I-84 from Hartford to Wilkes Barre, PA and much of I-81 from Wilkes Barre through MD, WV, and VA to I-40 in TN, was rough enough to shake my fillings loose, not to mention the motorhome itself. This time we are considering I-91 to I-95 to the Tappan Zee Bridge then I-287 to I-78 to I-81, avoiding some of those bone-jarring roads either side of Wilkes Barre. Can any of you report on the road conditions on that route?

If this isn't a good forum to ask questions like that, can anyone suggest a better one?

    Thanks...

I've always found that the best way to find out road conditions is to look closely at the road while you are driving. Who cares what the road conditions are 100 miles up the road? They'll change before you get there! Better to pay close attention to the weather forecast.....

As far as the road being too rough, well Boo Hoo!!!! Get used to it! Also, the Tappan Zee was demolished 2 or 3 years ago.

And, as for a suggestion as to where you can take your question, I'd suggest you post it on an RV forum, and not bother the Professional Drivers with your prattle.

You are welcome here and there is nothing wrong with you asking your question. Unless you know my definition of smooth, too crowded, too rough, etc I'm not sure the opinion of truck drivers apply very well to planning RV trips.

Maybe RV forum members have info better related to your needs. Maybe there will be good answers hear for you so please stick around. Maybe post your Q in the New Driver section or Experienced Drivers section.

As a driver I often didn't have much choice picking a route. Either the company dixtated the route I must drive or geography or time was dictating which roads O needed to drive to arrive on-time for an appointment.

Maybe tell us what roads you want to use and truck drivers can give you their impression.

Thanks, tscottme. And thanks for the welcome. I asked the question here because it's the "Questions to Truckers from the General Public" forum and there are a LOT more truckers out there than there are RV'ers, and you guys travel many orders of magnitude more miles per year than we do so if anyone has information about road state-of-repair it'd be you guys..

As for what roads I want to take, I just need a way to get from southern New Hampshire to middle Tennessee and back again in a reasonable amount of time and hopefully not shaking every nut and bolt loose in my old 1991 Toyota motorhome. Normally we take I-84 thru Hartford then west to I-81 in Wilkes Barre, then southwest on I-81 to I-40 east of Knoxville, then I-40 to Cookeville, TN. Road conditions aren't terrible except for a stretch of I-81 southwest of Wilkes Barre and I-84 thru PA and NY which is enough to jar my teeth loose.

We're hoping this time I-91 out of Hartford to I-95 to the "New TZ" Bridge then I-287 to I-78 to I-81 will be better, although I see from maps.google.com that there is a lot of construction on stretches of that road too.

Maybe there is no good way.

Anyway, thanks again for the welcome and the assurance that I didn't commit some major faux pas by asking my question here.

It occurs to me that my original question may have been misunderstood. I'm looking for state-of-repair, not "current road conditions" like weather or heavy traffic. I get it that the latter isn't something that can be reported on a forum like this since it changes by the hour or less.

    Apologies for the confusion.

Yeah, this wasn't our best look. Sometimes, members of the general public need to be corrected, but this wasn't one of them.

Eric, welcome to TruckersReport and you're fine posting here. The intent of this particular forum is for our professional drivers to help members of the general public, so you're in the right spot. Apologies for the surly malcontent, but he'll no longer be participating in this thread.

A lot of times it's better to simply deal with the rough road. Why? Well the counties and states that are lax about keeping the interstate in good repair are the same locations that don't do maintenance on secondary roads either. Just as good a chance of being in a worse road by trying to go around as not.

Thanks, Zvar. Yes, I agree. I wasn't planning on trying to take back roads around poorly-maintained interstate stretches, instead I'm just trying to choose between I-84 to I-81 (known to be in poor shape for much of the run) or I-91 to I-95 to the (new) TZ Bridge and down that way (unknown condition).

Right now we're leaning towards the TZ Bridge route since we figure it can't be any worse than the I-84 to I-81 route, but the TZ Bridge route is uncomfortably close to New York City with all the flooding they've had down there in the last couple of days. I'll call around down there and see if any of the flooding caused problems farther north in the Tarrytown / Nyack area.
