So I filed for my operating authority yesterday. Do I need to get the Boc-3 stuff and insurance before they’ll approve my authority request in 20-25 days, or do I handle that after my MC number is active? Can’t seem to find a clear answer. The process agent is simple to get, but I don’t want to do it until things are official. Can’t get the insurance until I buy the truck. Technically I can’t buy a truck until the DOT number is active, and I’m not paying for insurance until I can actually start hauling. Do I need to make a move now, or just sit and wait for my authority to come through?

Pretty funny that within minutes of my filing I was getting phone calls and texts from businesses offering to sell me their process agent services.

Authority is active only after the insurance is filed. You have your DOT# but don't have a truck. How are you going to find insurance without it? Most of people have had trucks already and have been leased on, before getting authority. I am curious myself what's the way to handle it for you. I'd pay some knowledgeable clerks to do the rest. Don't forget about IFTA, UCR, Drug Consortium, IRP,... heck...what else did I forget about?
    Maybe OOIDA could help ?

Make sure the 2290 is current when you buy a truck.
You don't need a mc# to buy a truck. Anyone can own one.
    Good luck

If the loan is not needed.
I remember they (bank) wanted me to provide a MC# of the carrier I was going to lease on to, in order to get a loan.

You never heard about people taking out loans to buy trucks? Well I took mine. 15% on 30K. I paid it off fast before it killed me.

No. I have never got a loan to buy a truck.
I currently have a trailer that I bought with a loan. 6% interest.

You will have to have your insurance in effect and filed with the FMCSA before your Authority will be Active. Also BOC 3 form (Process Agents) must be on file.

That’s what’s I needed to know. The truck is 2 weeks from being mine. I filed for the authority as soon as I had my EID. I want to get on the road fairly soon after the insurance becomes active. That’s a expensive payment to make with no income.

I’m buying the truck without a loan, and don’t quite have enough yet to pay for it.
