Please excuse my inexperience with the sliding of the fifth wheel. I've never had to.

Either way, with the slider switch disengaged I usually receive a exclamation point on the dash along with a beep while moving, I've never hit this nor have had the need to. Same goes for the air suspension being dumped.

Upon hooking up to a trailer, I heard a pop. Did a tug test and fifth wheel slid to the rear. I got out and did a visual. Thats when i noticed the switch being on. of course everything has to go wrong at once; rain, flash light messing up and yard lights not on. . Upon messing with the switch and reversing and going forward for about a half an hour i decided to call it quits for the day. The pins would not engage. I was empty as well.

Is there something I couldve done to fix this?

Is it possible for the pins to just pop out on there own?

Is this driver error or someone messing with me?( Mind you the key was missing, hate slip seating luckily I have a spare.)

I feared for my life and those around me. Could I have lost the trailer while the pins were released? What else could've happened?

Need truck information and brand of fifth wheel.

I don't slide my plate either.
Your hitch won't slide off the truck. There should be stops at the end of the rails preventing that.

    Good luck.

    Roaddreamer Thanks this.

5 years or so a cattle hauler forgot to lock his fifth wheel near Ignacio Ontario the trailer with fifth wheel attached ended up in a rock cut .. I’d say most wouldn’t fall off but some do

I appreciate the responses. Is it possible to have a mechanical error that they just released on there own. I get anything is possible. But this seems fishy to me. No key, next to no fuel, I've only driven this particular truck for a few months. But never have had an issue or as many issues as I've had in my 5 years of driving on and off as I've had here

I'd rather not divulge these details. Trying to keep any information that can lead to identify who I am out.

Well, if you couldn't slide it, are you sure the locking pins were "released"? Maybe one or more was stuck in the lock position. Are you sure you didn't release the 5th slide when you meant to dump the air bags?

I would have dropped the trailer and had a closer look at the 5th wheel slide and lock mechanisms. Used a hammer to insure nothing was stuck. I think springs wants to keep them in the lock position as long as there is no air supplied to keep them in the unlock position, so with the 5th wheel slide in the travel position, a hammer should force them all to close as long as the plate is in a position to allow them to close. Regardless, the plate might have moved enough to allow the pins to go in with sufficient urging on your part.

I don't normally dump my airbags when hooking to a trailer unless i can visually see that it's low.

And I could slide the fifth wheel I just couldn't get them to lock. Even when they were lined up.

Attached is a photo. Hope it's the right photo. As I took a few of the other trucks to show to my dispatcher. Thumbnails are hard to see.

Due to slip seating I also don't carry a toolbox with me as that would be a lot of stuff to constantly transfer. Plus can't leave anything in the truck as the other driver usually takes it. Like all my trash bags I got the fuel counter lady to give me.

Buy a schoolyard black board box of chalk.

Prior to doing anything, MARK a big fat mark up and down across your 5th wheel rail, your 5th wheel pegs that go into the holes on each side of that rail. And so on.

Once you verify and move it, then weigh it again to be sure its legal GET ANOTHER CHALK MARK of a different color onto both sides of that rail and slot plus pegs that go into the new holes.

You do MUST be careful in that rain. Two problems. First you may put on too much up front onto your steer axle. OR WORSE take too much OFF and now cannot steer. You will only go straight as your pavement tries it's best to peel your steer tires off. That's the rain talking. Or ice or snow.

The second part is you might move the 5th wheel too far forward cause your trailer front plate, pigtail, gladhnds etc to take out many important things on the back of your 18 wheeler.

    Have fun!
