Fender mirrors

Fender mirrors, yep, they're ugly to a point. Personally, I don't want a truck without them, but yet, I see many trucks that don't have them. They've saved my butt many times from hitting obstacles with the right front corner. At one time I had a 379 XH that didn't have them, and most of the trucks I see without them are 379's. Now on that particular truck I'd think they would be practically mandatory. I for one, always had trouble seeing out of the cab on those. I'm not a short guy, 5'11", and no, I never rode with the seat on the floor or pushed all the way back.

So, I guess my question is, why don't ALL trucks use them?

When I was with USX, they had that stupid little camera mounted right above the center point of the right steer. IMO, it was marginally useful at best. Aaa, I never did like that company anyway, LOL.:biggrin_2559:

Some companies require their lease O/O's to have fender mirrors. I believe they are needed, would not want to drive with-out them.

I don't like them! I would never buy a truck with one on it and if I chose a truck that had one on it a condition of the sale would be that it be removed before I take delivery.

I've never seen any reason for them, They're ugly and that right there is enough of a reason to not have them.
I have pretty much always driven long nosed conventionals and I have never hit anything with a corner of a truck because I pay attention to what's around me when I'm setting up to back and I pay attention to any changes that I see during the backing process.

And that is exactly what you should do!:biggrin_25525:

Granted, I've never driven a W900. But IMO, I'd think just in a safety aspect that they would be used. Even when driving a Century, I've noticed, especially at night in a large city with lots of traffic, that if it hadn't been for a fender mirror, I might have hit one of those tiny little cars people like anymore. I really could not pick him/her up with the door mirrors, and yepper, they were properly adjusted. In those cases, they were between the door mirrors, and my fender mirrors.

I've noticed TMC uses the ones that are mounted right behind the bug deflector on the hood.

Just to get more opinions, how about that totally useless mirror mounted above the rightside door window. Now that's one I've never had a use for.:biggrin_25525:

That lil' ol' thang? It's great for checking that you secured your right hand fuel tank cap after you've run 10 miles down the road from your fuel stop!

    :biggrin_2559: Yepper, and that's about all!!:biggrin_2559:

I installed one of those on a T6 I had. Well, the bolts were already there in the door frame. So, $40 later, I found out what a waste of money they were. But at least I used the bolts for something more than plugging the bolt holes!:biggrin_2559:

Mickey mouse mirrors are ugly. I've never had them. It's unfathomable to buy a $125,000+ truck and drill 6 holes into the hood and fenders. But some guys like 'em and thats fine.

You see, my friend, engineers that design trucks are not truck drivers, for some odd reason. They play around in their little cubicles on their little computers designing trucks, but have never been in a truck or driven one either.

Its another way to make sure a micro-fourwheeler isn't in your blind spot. Lefthand side is great for monitoring the progress of passing vehicles while your central vision is still trained in the motion vector of your vehicle.

It's allowed me to dodge being trailer-whipped by a passing looser wheel-holder more than once.

But yeah, they do look bad on a long nose, and those little single strut things look stupid.

Now lets look at the stupid law suits that those ugly mirrors will stop! They are the same as those good buddy windows in your passenger door! Peterbilt has to put them in due to a law suit several years back because of an accident. Yes they are ugly but in todays lawsuit crazy society just put something over there! Even one on the back side of the bug shield. To tell the truth I like them especially for some of these metro areas where 4 wheelers put key in ignition and leave home without the brain! But they will sue the crapola out of the big rolling target which we are! I'd rather be safe than worry about looks and looks don't count here! I look good enough anyway so I don't have to worry about a silly mirror!
