    Really...?

    My story..

In 1994 while unemployed after miltary svc I got a speedng ticket...7 mph over the posted limit on the interstate..I was keeping up with traffic.was unable to pay it and the state of KS suspended my license.I lived in a town of 200, had to drive to look for work..got pulled over because I forgot to use my turn signal..got a driving on suspended..still had to look for work..the little hick town cop now knew I had a suspended license..pulled me over again..suspended #2..and then #3 which in KS the third is a felony..they put me in a minimum security prison for ten months..

I couldn't afford to move, couldn't afford to pay the ticket to unsuspend the license etc..I was desperate to get a job. I wasn't running drugs, wasn't doing anything anybody else in this world does normally to get a job..the net barely existed...by your words driver..I should be ignored, homeless, and and broke...

It was the ONLY time my license was ever suspended or revoked.EVER...and up until then I had a clean criminal record..and since then I have had a clean criminal record....It wasn't a habit..it was circumstance so you are full of it

would you want to pedal 45 miles one way to go to a JOB INTERVIEW all sweaty and then have to turn around and pedal 45 miles back..doubt it..also, having dislocated both knees, busted a femur, broke six ribs, and a collarbone in the military..my body wouldn't have made that trip under human power at the time...and now you know why I wasn't still in the military..I was too tore up to continue and was medically discharged for those injuries..To date I've had three knee operations on one knee and one on the other..in the next few years I'll need another to replace one of the knees AGAIN completely...

You probably culdn't pedal across a parking lot without havin a coronary driver...let alone 45 miles one way..we lived there because it was home..the rent fit our budget at that moment..and that was that..

I had a wife who was a brittle diabetic on SSI and a 2 month old son..had to do something..I didn't HAVE a choice in the matter..some do..I didn't..it was either find work before unemployment ran out or be starving and homeless

Unemployment was just enough to keep them fed with her SSI and keep her meds filled and pay rent..we didn't have a phone, cable, net or even a computer..there was no bus or train service between the two and I bummed rided when I could..in the three instances that I was..i busted for it it was either go or not interview at all..I couldn't take the chance or the risk..

Now..put yourself in those shoes..what would you do?

Granted, in the end my wife still ended up living with her sister 700 miles away but I did what I had to do and hoped it would work out and I'd get a job, pay off the ticket and get my license reinstated before I was caught again..I just had to get the job..once I had it I had rides to work with other people that worked there...
Never once was it held against me..eve right after I got out..I still got the job I was doing it for..and never once did it factor in to being hired as a truck driver either...I was a non violent, non drug or alcohol related offender..it was treated as a misdemeanor by every company I have ever been hired by and I'm #### thankful that no one in their hr departments were as short sited as some of the posters in this thread

I agree. Circumstances can sometimes make a man commit a crime that he would ordinarily fully abide by, that does not make one a bad person it simply makes them a victim of bad circumstances.

Exactly..sometimes #### just happens and we do what we must. I was just never penalized by any employer for it and I thank them every time I think about it.

Would I have resorted to selling drugs? Hell no..I have my principles..

Felony convictions. There are only 2 major criminal issues that will prevent, by law, you from becoming a truck driver:

1)Distribution of, possession with intent to distribute, or importation of a controlled substance. (illegal drug)

2)The use of criminal force such as with a gun or knife.

If you have any other convictions you may still be able to get a job. Different companies vary on this so you will need to check with each company to confirm they still hire felons.

the thought that no one ever changes is absurd. I have been penalized enough for actions i did in 1985. Yet at least half the trucking outfits in the country still wouldnt touch me in 2012. Been in AA for 12 years worked in corrections helping men make a new start. There are plenty of men walking around still doing worse then I ever did parked in this trucksrop right now. It is no coincidence there are empty nip bottles all over the back end of the lot
Another poster mentions the decline of industry he remembers only the rosy picture the buisness always has had its share of fat, smelly, stupid drunk and addicted people it did in 85 when i left and judging by the way they act today still are

Powell peralta you are cluess buddy. I spent the better of 18 years arresting felons. True some had it good and chose a different road to travel, which subsequently jailed them. But, there are the few that constantly delt a bad hand. We all know someone like that. To judge a mans heart is not our job, thats up to our lord. I believe in giving someone a chance once they have been properly vetted. Not all felonies determine whether one can drive a big truck or not. I would bet one weeks settlement that you have committed a felony in your life. You could commit a felony and not realize its a felony. Have you ever not filed a tax return? Or known someone who hasnt? Thats a federal felony....shooting on federal land without permit is a felony. In calif its a felony to posses a tire thumper(billy club). I can go on and on so ill spare you
