I am having some trouble with becoming an o/o. First things first got a felony from 2009 and was convicted in 2010. Discharge probation this june. I have had my cdl for 2 years and been driving for 16 months. I am only 24 but i know a couple things believe it or not. Hauled double 48' flatbeds weighing in at 125,000 ibls. I have had oversized, over height loads. I ran conveyor trucks and knuckle boom trucks. Like I said I know a thing or 2. Not saying I am the greatest driver ever to grace this earth but kinda got a good idea of how to drive. The problem is no one will take me on as an o/o cause of my age and my felony. Felony aint old enough and i aint old enough. Landstar, Mercer, Farm2Fleet, FedEx Custom Critical cant find no one. I am working now but want to take the next step. Anyone got any suggestions and dont make a stupid suggestion like swift or hunt. I got the money for my own rig and dont wanna go through the ######## of getting my own authority and have to make a name for myself just wanna lease on and see where it goes. I am out of Las Vegas if thats helps. Thanks y'all and be safe out there.

Honestly man, I don't know of a single company that would hire you, that would be one you want to work for. Unfortunately the good companies won't due to the reasons you listed, to young plus a recent felony. I wish I had better news for you but reality of the situation is you are going to have to choose between some pathetic company like swift or get your own authority.

Our company requires a minimum of 5 years experience as an owner operator before they will consider looking at any application. Typical. The washout rate for O-O's is high enough for experienced drivers, very few companies are going to cut the requirements.
Very few financial institutions are going to loan money for a truck to you given the numbers above. And then there is the felony

Your best bet is find a job as a company driver, keep your nose clean for 3-4 years, good work record, excellent driving record, and then revisit the issue.

Just a thought but can you have the conviction ex sponged since you are off probation. It won't allow you to buy a firearm but will allow to legally check never been convicted of a felony on job applications and get a twic card (if needed) as well as a passport.

I would look at smaller companies. They have more wiggle room as far as who they hire

He can get a TWIC card now probably. Very few felonies are disqualifying.

I wasn't sure how that worked. I knew not all were disqualifying but don't know which ones. Would have thought it to be the other way around actually.

I don't think anyone will touch you until you are off paper. Seems to me most say your conviction has to be 5 years old. Age wise some carriers hire people at 24. You can't be far from qualifying. Usually a person can not cross state lines while on paper either, seems to me you have to get the OK from your PO and carry a letter.

Very few felonies are listed in the immediate disqualifier on the application-but there's a mention of if you've been convicted of a crime under such and such act (it was a while back, may be worded slightly differently) you're disqualified for 7 years from date of release from supervision. That act covers a bunch of other more common felonies.

That was my experience, had to google the reference in front of the lady taking the application information to find out I didn't qualify at the time.
