2004 Volvo VNL 780 Cummins ISX 565
At first My truck was having problems building and holding air, it would go up to only 80 psi while driving and when slowing down or completely stopped it would then drop down to 60 psi and under to the point then the fan clutch kicks in, so I drove like that until I got to a mechanic shop but once I got there and I completely stopped I noticed that my fan clutch stopped working even under 60 psi, so I thought it was just a air issue. So the next day mechanic calls truck is done, it was main hose lines coming from the air compressor to the dryer, now truck builds air and holds air. But I noticed once I got back home and turned off the truck that I could spin the fan clutch easily it was freewheeling. So I went on the road to test the truck turned on the a/c it did not work, driving 67 highway speed.
So if the fan clutch goes bad, does it effect the a/c even when I am driving highway speeds
Also is there a quick fix for the fan clutch freewheeling
Also does the air compressor have any connection with the a/c system, because the mechanic did change a couple of air lines.

If the fan is free wheeling while off the clutch is probably bad. Running low air pressure can damage the clutch, it won't release completely and will burn the lining up.
The ac is not tied to the air system. It has a pressure sensor that tells the ecm to turn the fan on and off. Being a Volvo it may have their monitoring system on driver side firewall that controls the ac, might see if it is kicking the system out, I believe it will have warning lights to say if that is issue.
Other reason ac could also have stop working is if when fan didn't come on high side pressure went too high and blew a line or spit out refrigerant from pressure relief. -
You have at least a few issues.
You may have an air leak, or the big price item bad, air compressor. Those if bought new are near $1500 just for the part.
You need to get your fan clutch checked out. -
Oldironfan Thanks this.
