Fail my CDL Road Test, so disappointed. Maybe CDL not for me?

Hi guys. New to becoming a trucker. I am extremely slow learner, maybe beyond dumb. The first school I went to is like 30-student group training style, I have to wait like 2-3 hours for my 10-minute turn. Every student has to figure out his/her own for every maneuver by watching a demo performed by only one instructor(boss himself) whenever he feels like it during the week. Most of time he is not even in the yard, or taking students for DMV test. One to one training only available when doing road driving by his brother. I couldn't figure out by myself, every student shows me different way. I am dumb, always mess up, so sometimes students ask me to get out the truck early for their turns because of my non stopping mistakes. Maybe one to one whole training is best for me, 3k just flash to the toilet.

Another school. I get 2 2hrs class weekly until 40hrs is finished. What can I say. The instructor yelling me and grab the dashboard all the time when he is with me. "You've been doing same mistake 100 times. I don't know what to tell you!" I am so afraid to meet him every time, I shouldn't and didn't say nothing whenever he is yelling, because what he says is correct. I tried to focus and follow his way, but mistake still happened. Things always keep slipping away on the driver seat, my hands and my legs don't always cooperate with my mind.

As right now, I can get all maneuvers right 90% of time if I do it so slowly with 1 or 2 pull up, like stop, think, and turn..... My instructor seems doesn't like me to use break a lot. He will come over and yelling:' Come on, we've been doing this 1000 times, when you gonna take next move? Don't be pretending you don't know nothing next!"

The day before the DMV test, we took the road drive again. I still shift like crap, missing gear and sometimes unable to recover it, stall the truck when start moving from uphill, forgot to splitter down to low gear before shifting. He angrily said I am not gonna pass like that, I need more training. He took over the drive seat and we back to the school. I agreed to cancel the DMV test, add 10 more additional hours with some discount. I know he did this for my own good, not the money.

Today, at the 50th hour, we arrived earlier in the DMV for final drive on DMV route for the first time(DMV is far from the school). I stalled once, still unable to catch up the road speed(too slow), missed the turn what he wanted me to do. I said I would just do the pre-trip test, and forget about others. He said try you luck all test, and handed me the key and said noting at all.

During the test, the examiner is a nice guy, I could've failed the air break inspection(forget to release the spring breaks during apply leakage test), I asked can I do it again, he smiles and nods his head. Next will be road test. For this DMV, I have to drive first half part of road test to the empty ground, then set up corns for skill test, then drive back to DMV. This means if you failed the first part of road test, you don't get chance to do skill test.

I passed the pre-trip, and failed the road in first 10 minutes.
    1. The examiner asked to pull to the side to demo emergency stop, I did everything correctly but when I pull out, I forgot to spitter down when started from 4. I immediately clutch down and fixed it before it stalls.
    2. I am unable to shift faster to follow the flow. It's 35 mph road, the examiner says"faster." I started it from 4,5,6,7(the school wants student start from 4 to avoid stalling), and, by the the time I reached 8, the road almost finished, and I have to turn right at tight intersection. I didn't have enough reaction time to shift down to 7, 6, and truck kept shaking turning through due to high gear in low speed(I applied the break to slow down), then my nerves kicked in and I kept grinding gears all around. I failed the test.

Can anyone give me some advices? I don't know why I am such slow learner, it's been 60 hours with 2 schools. I am so embarrassed about myself, or the trucking is not for me?

Stressed? The trainer may be doing you a favor by showing how bad it can get out on the road. If you can learn how to note the stress situations and keep your cool.

It’s a valuable lesson to learn that you’re not suited to do the job. I know that I’ve had that kind of experience in the past. If you really feel that you’re not adequate at truck driving after this, you should probably try something else. I’m sure that there’s work that will suit your ability.

    Good luck!

Maybe you should train with automatic transmission; that's like driving a car.
Where is your location? Maybe some OJT in your area.

My first statement is don't call yourself dumb we are learn at different rates we put to much time comparing ourselves to others. You can learn how to drive & operate the truck. You're doing it you are a lot further along than before. What is the reason you want to do trucking? Is there a real passion for this. What state do you reside in. The trucking school are a money mill. They want that money to keep rolling in. If you don't already know teaching is a total different skill and just because I can drive one doesn't mean I can teach it to someone else. Keep encouraging yourself & don't give up if this is your passion.

No big deal, some people take longer to learn than others. If it makes you feel any better my buddy has failed his road test 4 times because of the backing portion. He's on attempt #5 in 2 weeks, his driving is perfect but he can't seem to do the 90 degree back.

It seems like your main issue is gear shifting, it took me weeks to learn how to drive a 13 speed. You can do your test on auto but you'll be restricted to auto transmissions. Once you get some experience you can always go back and do the test in manual, your nerves will be alot more calmer.

You'll get it man, don't beat yourself up over it.

    Why does that happen?

People are different and think in different ways. Are you ignoring what you think you should you should do in favor of what someone else thinks you should do causing a conflict?

What mistake is he talking about? are you trying to do it the way they think you should, or how you feel it should be done?

I tend to take things too literally and it doesn't work well when I try to do things the way people explain how to do it. They just don't give enough detail and if you do it like the way they explain it, it rarely works.

Just focus on the basic task and trust yourself, or your subconscious, to do what needs to be done.

I agree with the idea of learning in an automatic. Just because you get rattled and mess up doesn't mean you can't learn it. Every new job i've had I had to learn and did stupid stuff. Later you could take the test for manual, or you may decide its not worth it. Many companies are going to automatic and even some old truckers like it better. It would boost your confidence.

I remember a job at a printing press.. they wanted to check me out and see if I could "grasp the concept". The press operator was explaining what a certain "knob" did.

They claimed the knob controlled "such and such" but "such and such" was really a side-effect result of what the knob really did. I could see what the knob was really doing and thought I was being tested. I told them what the knob really did... I didn't get the promotion. I wasn't mistaken. that's exactly how it worked, the maintenance dept verified it. The "operator" just squeaked by from only knowing the results of the side-effect and yet I was deemed an unsuitable candidate ...

Life doesn't seem to be fair sometimes. looking back, I'm glad it didn't work out.

Not everybody is cut out to drive a truck, it is just a fact of life. I wish you luck, but getting rattled easy is not a good trait for a driver, there will ALWAYS be instances that rattles you, and you never know when they are coming until they are there.

Like I said, I wish you luck, but I would be looking at alternative ways to make a living too, if I was you.
