Honestly about the only truck model I'd rule out without question would be a Freightliner Columbia. Or any Sterling.
They're pretty much all the same under the hood, unless it's a Mack. But I definitely want something pre- 2007 or whatever year the DPF became a thing. I know 2003-2007 most engines were boat anchors until people learned how to 'fix' them, and chances are, if I'd buy something from that era, it'd either be fixed already or would be fixed at first hint of trouble.
Whatever it is, it's NOT likely going to be used in an OTR operation, unless my plan would change. I wanna stay local or maybe regional.OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this. -
paid 5000 for this one…it’s as clean as they come even dot gives it a blessing and it was paid for by the end of the week…and now paid for about 50x over.JoeyJunk, RedForeman, Ruthless and 3 others Thank this. -
Take this how ever you like
But .. your 1st truck
And are shopping by price and not brand
You best take somebody with you that knows trucks well
Just remember the cheaper the truck the more likely there is goning to be some expenssive suprises
And its less that a 50/50 chance the seller is gona be completely honestVampire, Sons Hero, exhausted379 and 2 others Thank this. -
Not many people are interested in FLD120's but I'd make somebody a great deal on a 1999 flat top that needs a motor. Set up for Detroit. Lots of brand new parts everywhere on the truck. Driveline and suspension bushings all practically new. Has 16 ply Michelin steers and matched 14 ply Goodyear drives knee deep rubber. For somebody that already had a good engine sitting around or knew where to get one it would be a great deal. It comes with a 14L engine that should be a good core, rebuildable. A rod bearing spun and there's paperwork from Clarke Power where they pulled the oil pan and confirmed that's what it was and not a main bearing.

We had a 96 with a cat in it here where I work. That truck was a money maker but nobody wanted to drive it because it was so ugly. It was parted out for a glider. -

This whole idea I have is more of an adventure, if you will. I don't really care about making a bunch of money, it's more about me doing things that I've always dreamed of, after listening to everyone for the last 20 years talking me out of doing things I thought I'd enjoy. Now, here I am at 42 years old wishing I'd have done those things I wanted.
Maybe I could sum this up as a mid life crisis. I dunno. But I've busted my arse all my life, and just wanna enjoy life a bit more. And if that means buying an old truck and slumming it, I'm good with the idea.
I followed NASCAR for a while. Kurt Busch was my favorite driver. He lost his cushy ride and big contract at Penske. Ended up driving for a third tier team afterwards with junk equipment. But he made the comment that he wanted to put the fun back in racing. And it worked well for him. That's kind of where I am I guess. Just wanna put the fun back in driving truck -
