If you were in the market for a starter truck, and you found what appears to be a deal, would you entertain the idea? How about Craigslist?

Or would you shy away knowing such places are full of scammers?

I've found and bought from both. Big thing is having somebody who knows what they're looking at.

Was looking for an old customer last fall. We looked at i think 18 trucks before we found even a decent one

I once sold a Truck through Facebook Market place.
Guy took it and leased to Landstar, which is where I had it leased too at one time.

It was this truck, he bought it, took off bumper guard, still runs it, I put the mirrors on front, since LS wanted hood mirrors, and they gave the mirrors to you.

Anywhere you go now days will be scammers. Normally if you can’t look at the truck in person or they want you to e-mail another person, it’s too good to be true, or they want you to send some code to verify, it’s normally a scam. Never give any info other than name and phone number until you know it isn’t a scam. I have bought and sold enough things on marketplace to recognize most of them. Even if you get to look at it in person, verify everything, ie vin, paperwork for rebuilds and other maint. Normally the ones that aren’t a scam will tell you when and where you can see the vehicle and are not going to ask for any money or acct info up front.
Some, I said some, not all of the banks are not even wanting to deal with individuals selling anymore, only dealerships. My bank doesn’t like it but they know I will verify everything, still they won’t give me a check until they have the title so that puts it on the seller to trust you and your bank. Can make it a pain if the other party still owes money and another bank is holding title. That’s why your local bank that knows you is most times your best option.

I sold my last truck on Facebook Market place. Had several good buyers interested and I was very honest and up front on all the information on truck. The part you need to understand is whom you are dealing with on each end. No problems for someone willing to do some homework on the seller or buyer to find if they are somewhat real and not a scam.

I've bought and sold trucks on Marketplace. Cash and western union work well for payment.
I was a little nervous driving to southside of Chicago with $25g+ cash to buy. It all work out.
    Good luck

No worse than buying from a dealership that just slaps a coat of paint on the frame and represents it as 3x more than its worth and crys when you offer them only 2.5 x the worth

Best truck I’ve ever owned came from Craigslist
Next best from auction time with a private seller
A couple decent one from an in person auction and
Worst truck came from a “reputable “dealer/ auction

its all about how honest they are and how hard you look for potential problems…some are easy to hide though

    Thanks for the replies.

I've been thinking (for about two years now) of buying a truck and leasing on somewhere, with the thought that if THAT works out, then stepping out with my own authority.

I know the market sucks, the interest is stupid high right now, fuel is not cheap and parts can be scarce.
I don't see any of that changing anytime soon, so that's just something to learn to live with. But I think there is, and probably going to be, more than a few trucks for sale. Guys that ran out and bought trucks and equipment when the market was great, have high overhead are probably regretting their life choices right now. I'm taking the opposite approach, buying a truck and starting out when no sane man is buying a truck and starting out.

So I'm looking on the lower end of the price range of trucks, something I can pay cash for and be able to absorb any loss without losing much sleep over. I know mechanically it'll probably need some attention, and I'm good with that. I have access to a shop and enough knowledgeable people to keep it going.

This leads me to Marketplace and craigslist. I've had more than a few candidates that I saw listed, and had interest in, but just haven't pulled the rip cord and jumped yet. Lots of pre emission 9400 Internationals in my area for $15-25 k.
