Expired Texas State Inspection on Truck/Trailer?

For those with a truck or trailer registered in Texas, is it true that having a Federal DOT inspection done on a truck/trailer with an expired TX State inspection will keep you legal, as long as you don’t enter TX? I’ve called several DMVs and DPS locations in TX, and I’m getting varied answers.

I think that it is probably true, but at the time of registration renewal, TX will require a state inspection and not a Federal DOT. Interestingly, I just had a lady from the DPS tell me that’s no longer the case today for interstate operations (apportioned plates).

    I’m lost.

In Nj you can ignore the state inspection (smoke test) just don’t get caught in NJ without that sticker! The only way for inspection to affect your registration is to get busted on the street with expired or no inspection. Dmv doesn’t ask about when registering anything (cars, pick ups, Big trucks)

If I’m not mistaken, Texas is the only state that requires their own TX state inspection and not the Federal DOT inspection to be able to register your truck/trailer in their state. Other states are fine with the federal DOT. I had a mechanic tell me that the TX state inspection is more thorough than the Federal DOT.

PA requires a state inspection and sticker, too. And the state inspection is more thorough than the typical FMCSA/DOT annual.

I don't know how much more thorough it could be. We do our own Federal inspections, and if you follow the inspection guidelines like you should, you check pretty much everything.

    UPDATE—

So I spoke with the mega carrier I used to be part of and their Road Rescue department said they just have their drivers get a Federal DOT inspection. They also do this for their trucks that stay in CA for local work for up to a year. Besides, TX doesn’t have these 24/7 weigh stations. Most of the time they are closed. Hahaha.

Pa used to be every 6 months. Think 2 or 3 years ago finally went to once a year inspections. As far as which inspection is more particular, just depends who does it, and if they are having a bad day. Of course your equipment condition is important.

I bought my truck in Texas and it just came with paper inspection, no sticker. This was last year.

The process is pretty much the same (I have PA SI/EM licenses) but PA pushes for a fail on anything you possibly can. It's a revenue generator for shops and expired fines are a HUGE revenue generator for the police. There isn't a single cop in PA that isn't looking at the stickers of every car, truck, and bike that passes them. Now you can't get pulled over for expired PA inspection in other states so I imagine TX would be the same way. The only problem being that they possibly require a state inspection as a condition of registration like MD and DE do. I don't know if they do but I would be curious to know.
