I am looking to start training to be an OTR truck driver (preferably through a company-sponsored program). I have had a driver's license since I've been 16 years old, continuously. However, due to lack of funds, I let my IL driver's license expire almost 60 days ago. Is this going to give me problems in trying to find a company to work for? What can I do to fix this problem (if it is a problem); maybe passage of time--how much?--after renewing the license, is the answer.

    Thanks.

Shouldn't be a problem unless it was suspended, or you were caught driving while it was expired.

Once you renew it (no penalty), it's not expired, right ?

Yeah. No suspension or anything like that. It just expired due to the passage of time.

Also, I didn't drive at all while it's been expired, and I don't plan to.

You may want to do a little checking on that............

I know a couple of companies that would have a problem with a recently expired license.

If he renews it before applying, then it's not expired. None of the companies that I've applied to have asked if my license has ever expired, only if it was suspended or revoked.

My CDL expired in Feb and I didn't renew it until the end of April. Zero problems renewing it (had to show them my birth certificate, actually). I wouldn't bother applying anywhere until you've gone down to DPS/DMV and taken care of your license.

Nobody (employer-wise) really cares if you forgot to renew your license as long as it's valid when they start processing you for your new driving job. Heh, in fact, this is the second time I've forgotten to renew my license until after it had been expired for more than 60 days. It's not really a big deal as long as you correct the problem.

Call this number and act like you are out of state working. You have 90 days from expiration to fix the problem. Surely you can come up with $30.

I use to live up there. I know they issue temporary 90 day licenses. They might let you renew online and be done with it.

Here in TN they have a 6 month grace period before retesting.
