Hello everyone, I am in the process of obtaining my own authority and I was wondering if anyone knows of any insurance companies that will write coverage for new companies with less than two years experience?
    Regards
    Jason

My understanding is that insurance is always more expensive for "start up" businesses, regardless of the level of experience. But if you can afford it, insurance can be had. I'd try Progressive, and of course any one of millions (more or less?) of companies who advertise on-line.

I doubt that those companies write commercial policies.

Less than two yrs driving experience is going to be EXPENSIVE if you can get insurance at all. Insurance companies are looking at risk and to them less than 2 yrs is HIGH risk. Thats why you see so many companies won't hire with less than two yrs experience. IF they can get the insurance its far too costly.

If you are close to the two yr mark I would just hold out a bit longer. Its hard enough to get started in trucking, without sky high insurance rates.

You are absolutely correct. Two years experience is pretty much the minimum that the insurance carriers require to insure a driver. At that experience benchmark, most of the carriers will write you, just keep in mind the rates will be much higher at that level than if you had five years experience. One thing I can offer that you may or may not already know, the insurance companies DO NOT check your employment history or dac reports. They only check your MVR. This means that your experience meter, for insurance purposes, starts running on the day that you acquired your CDL. For example, you got your CDL four years ago but in that four years you only drove for one year and worked in another industry for three years; the insurance company will see that as four years experience because that is what your MVR will show. I don't know if that applies in your case but that is a tidbit of info not many people think about.

Now that is fascinating! CDL, drive a year or so, work construction or sales for a couple more, walk into an insurance company and apply? Hmmm. Don't they look at work history? Don't they ask how many years you operated a Commercial Vehicle? If they don't, you just posted the biggest hint to becoming an O/O I have seen so far.

    Thanks so much.

The previous scenario I posted is only in reference to getting liability insurance as an INDEPENDENT running under your own authority. This would not apply if you were going to work for a company or to lease to a company, as the company will check your job history. In essence, the insurance company is only concerned with your MVR and safety issues as found on said MVR. They are not concerned with DAC or other "employment verification".

I thought that my original posting was clear but I just re-read it and thought it might need clarification.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense to me.

Slick50 has some great posts on his experience with Insurance, O/O, and the like.

I appreciate your help as well.

I had my boss pull my MVR not long ago and it doesn't show the day that I received my CDL. I was hoping so since I have more experience then I have my license. This is Texas by the way.

I find that hard to believe as I see MVRs regularly although I will admit I don't recall ever seeing a TX version, so you are probably right in that case. I know that TN,KY,IN,OH,MS,and AL all show cdl issue date as these are the states I have hired from at one point or another.
