The exhaust manifold is leaking and there is a small exhaust leak near the DPF. B oth leaks are small. How much, if at all, will this hurt my MPG? If I get it fixed should I expect to see mpg increase? Woundering if anyone has experience with this. Truck is a 2009 volvo vnl730 with a cummins isx 3.36 gears 13 sp. 480,000 mi.

The leak at the manifold will get worse, I wouldn't worry so much about the dpf. If its a leaking manifold or manifold gasket yes you are losing some power and some mpg how much I don't know. More than likely with a small leak at manifold it will only leak when cold then seal when it gets hot. If the gasket lets go it will be a show stopper no doubt. It may last a month or longer like it is who knows. Just seeing a small residue I doubt you are losing enough to know any different.

Exhaust leaks lead to loss of heat for the aftertreatment system which leads to insufficient regens which leads to check engine lights which leads to getting towed to a shop due to the truck being derated so I would say get them fixed.

Should be more worried about your health not the mpg / I have a Volvo 2008, with Volvo D13 motor ,I replaced the exhaust manifold 3 times; 2000+$ job/ All this new trucks have high manifold backpressure and are leaking sooner or later. I use a smoke,heat carbon monoxide alarm in my sleeper all the time, I don't trust this new trucks and the alarm went off a 5-6 times while parked idling and sleeping . Volvo trucks take fresh air for engine through the intake located outside in front of the hood, but the cab air filter for driver .,.... is located under the hood, next to windshield, pushing all the fumes leaking from engine in the cab; the engine needs fesh air, who cares about the drivers,we are expandable; I would fix it asap, the carbon monoxide can kill quickly , and diesel fumes are causing cancer.

This is just the tip of the iceburg! Volvo exaust leaks into the cabin vents have been causing cancer! They are notorius for this, and Volvo has refused to take any design action to change things. Drivers have gone to sleep in the sleeper only to NOT wake up due to carbon monoxide asphyxiation. This happens several times a year, and yet NO CLASS ACTION suit against Volvo? What the hell is going on. They pay off the families and lawyers to keep their mouths shut and just let other drivers die in their sleep, get cancer, get poisoned while driving and fall asleep at the wheel. This is wrong, write your Congressman about this now! All Volvo's will eventually do it, because they place their blow-by tubes and exaust connections directly below the intake vent for the cabin, they could have fixed this 20 years ago, but no. The same design year after year! Please VOLVO drivers, we must start a class action lawsuit NOW!

The Carbon Monoxide and Toxic Fumes that come into the cab and sleeper from these leaks can cause many health problems that can even cause death and accidents. If you look at all the complaints that the NHSTB has received on the Volvo, you will find that many have been filed for problems with exhaust fumes coming into the cab and causing serious problems, and it will probably be just a matter of time until lawsuits are filed.
Volvo is not the only one having problems, Navistar is having similar problems and a class action lawsuit is
being filed because of it.
