2007 780 with D12...so 350 miles after replacing #2 egr valve something funky is going on with the exhaust brake. I still have high and low but braking power is dramatically reduced. Also, the noise level has increased substantionly, almost like there is no muffler. I have good power and am getting great mpg, 7.5 at the moment. The engine noise sounds a liittle higher pitched at 64mph. At idle I get a chirping/whistle coming from the exhaust brake area but this goes away as soon as I press down the accelerator. I have looked for soot to indicate an exhaust leak but can't see any and can't smell exhaust in the cab. Any ideas before I drop it off at Volvo? Thanks.

May be a turbo bearing. And no dash codes?
-
It could be the EPG if it is affecting your idle. Not sure if you know where it is or not but just in case, left side of engine where the oil pan and block meet. Should have an airline running into it. Ran into this problem a few times working on our fleet of volvos.

No dash codes. I'll look for that air line. The sound is more air leak in nature than bearing whine. Thanks.

If it is the EPG there will not be a code. It is just a small cylinder that regulates the exhaust pressure. No sensors. Its all mechanical.

Drop of at Volvo ? What for i don't hear a real problem . 7.5 mpg ! Does it pull well ? You might b over analyzing it .
-
Seems to pull ok but I like to stay lite. Well infact it pulls awesome since replacing #2 egr valve and the engine is out of derate mode. If I left alone and lived with the problem can a faulty epg do any damage?
-
Don't know what a epg is ? if all the problem is the jake and you are lite and running down mountains is not a safety issue i would wait . Sounds like it runs great why mess with it . you know at some point something will need work or a PM i would wait till then

The EPG will not do any damage however, if the EPG gets bad enough, at idle, the engine will surge. It will drop down to about 100rpm and then jump up to regular idle and smoke about every 2 or 3 seconds. Not sure if your truck is an auto or manual but I know in the autos it will pretty much derate the engine enough to where it will barely move. It doesn't affect the manual trucks as much but it is still noticable.
Wideglide, the EPG is the exhaust pressure governor. It regulates the pressure of the exhaust that controls the jake/exhaust brake found on the D12 volvo. So if the EPG goes completely bad, the governor will continuously open and close which tries to choke the engine out and then lets it idle for a few seconds and then chokes it out again and so forth and so on.TheEnglishMan Thanks this. -
Bulletpoof, thanks for the reply. I have the ZF auto, so a visit to my local dealership appears to be unavoidable. Hope it will do the 1900 miles I need to travel to get there. Thanks again to all for their replies.
BulletProof Thanks this.
