    Hi,
Can an Ontario, Canada “AZ” driver’s license be exchanged for a CDL license in the US? The AZ license is essentially the equivalent of the CDL in the US and is needed to drive tractor trailers in Ontario. I’m especially curious about North Dakota, Montana and North Carolina?

I have my green card and can legally work in the US.

    Thanks in advance.

no exchanging,if you want a license here you would have to take all the written tests here,We have to do that even to go from one state to next..

Yes you can exchange your AZ to CDL, when i moved to Toronto from Minnesota I was able to exchange mine that way.
There is a treaty between Canada and the U.S. that all bordering states and provinces has a exchange set up.
Now mind you, I had one hell of a time to get mine done, the regular people at the counter don't always know this, I had to get an
higher up help me find the rule to show the counter clerk then it was a go.
You do not have to take any tests, you exchange yours for theirs, good luck.

I'm sure that depends on the state. In IL you have to take the written, pretrip, and road tests even if you're trading just an out of state CDL.

North Dakota says they have an exchange agreement with Ontario and I need to go to a driver's license office and bring my driver's license from Ontario, have my Soc Sec #, my green card with me, pay them $20 and pass a vision screening and they will exchange my AZ from Ontario for a CDL from ND.

Most states do exchanges with basically turning in your old out of state license for the new state. Just pay fees, no tests needed. However, I hear Illinois doesn't play ball that way and makes you start from scratch. Now I don't know about Canada to The states or vice-versa. BTW, the no test needed deal is a courtesy, not a rule, so, in theory, they could have you retest, if you look and act goofy !

Also I think you need to have an address for the state in which you're going to live in

Are you sure that this North Dakota procedure is for a CDL and not just for a garden-variety passenger vehicle license? For example, Alberta offers an easy exchange of an Ontario license for an Alberta class 5, 6 or 7 license (passenger vehicle), but makes an Ontario CDL holder go through both knowledge and road tests for an Alberta CDL.

Well, I had two separate ND Dept of Transportation people say that. I will probably find out firsthand real soon.

    Wymon Thanks this.
