I live in Dayton, OH. I’m thinking of getting my Hazmat/Tanker endorsement. I have 1 year of experience with refer/dry van. Does anyone know of any places that hire/train people just getting into fuel hauling? Would companies expect me to get my hazmat/tanker endorsement before considering my applications?

Some will help you get the hazmat/tanker endorsements.
If you already have the endorsements, companies will train you to be a fuel hauler.
You asked about fuel hauling, but I'll throw some other options out there anyway.Last edited: Oct 15, 2022

@davstu92 --
Current fuel hauler here...been doing this for a while now (well over a year).
I deliver mostly in northern FL & southern GA.
The basic idea you've described above is a sound one.
There are other Forum threads here in the "Tanker, Bulk & Dump Trucking" section--that describe/talk about different things specifically in fuel hauling.
You would do yourself rather proud to spend some time reading through them. There's plenty of good info there--you'll learn A LOT about what to expect in fuel (& other tank sectors), before you get into it.
The hazmat tanker world is arguably one of (if not THE) most competitive segments in the industry--for hiring drivers.
Based on what I've experienced--get the tanker & hazmat endorsements BEFORE you apply for the relevant jobs, if you can.
Also--while you're at it--get a TWIC card, too.
In my view--one year of t/t experience really isn't enough, to haul fuel.
Why?
Mistakes/mishaps in that world are either very expensive, very dangerous--or BOTH. It can indeed be a very unforgiving place.
Get some other tanker experience elsewhere, first--for at least a year. Preferably non-hazmat.
The Kenan Advantage Group suggestion above is a very good one. There--you can sample different types of tanker duty--all without the usual hassles of changing employers. You might find something there that you like even better than fuel.
Also...while there...if one sector of tanker should slow down, due to less freight...you can put in for a transfer to a busier group.
Fuel hauling is one sector they do--rather heavily.
Hope some of this helps...
