Today I watched a truck roll out of the yard placarded for oxidizer after he was off loaded and empty.
What is the penalty for this type of infraction?

I honestly don't know, but, the penalty for not having his shipping papers at hand/at the ready are pretty good. The scenario I'm refering to is, lets say there's a problem while the truck is parked and is placard for a haz load. Now the responders DON'T know that the trailer is empty, and they show up and THINK the trailer has a haz load and are looking for the papers, but can't find them. That could cause some problems, I would think.

No wonder I see these guys with ladder and scrapers removing the stickers.
Thats a serious kick in the wallet!

$2,500 per placard if needed and not present or if displayed and not needed. However, there are extenuating circumstances: I dropped a hazmat load in Greeley, CO when it was -5 degrees F. The placards were stick-on with glue swiped over them. I couldn't peel them off even with a putty knife, duct tape froze before it could stick to the trl and rattle-canned paint would even freeze before sticking. I did not have a propane torch and don't like that method anyway. I took the trl to the yard in Denver for the shop to deal with it.

That might be extenuating circumstances to you, but whoever writes the ticket might just see it as easy money for the state

This is why I like placard holders. Cheap to buy and install. Don't have to worry about stick on placards that fall off or won't come off. I made a set of placard holders that insert into the stake pockets on my trailer. Pop them in, insert placard, remove when done.

*most* LS wagons have placard holders I use plexi-glass over the top of the placard so it stays in the holders....works pretty good

Yeah, they work great on a trailer but containers get stuck on ones and they are usually ones w/ HD adhesive.

Too bad they couldn't add a pull tab that would rip enough out to keep the driver out of trouble but that would temp every person walking by to tug on it and we would get tagged for not having a placard...can't win sometimes...
