hi,I have a problem with my temp gauge, when the wires or it could be where the harness plugs into my ecm, when it gets wett, say its raining,or even when ive had my engine washed,my temp gauge will go to 250 and the warning lights will come, then the gauge will go back the other way say to 130,and the warning lights will go out,my engine is not hot tho,I thot about unplugging the plugs at the ecm and cleaning the connection, anyone ever have had this problem, and if so anyone got any advice on how I should try to fix this problem,i would like to fix it myself if I can,im an o/o and hate to pay a shop 100 an hr,if theres away that I can get to the bottom of this, any replies would be appreciated, thanks rick

Check the coolant sensor connection. It should be towards the back of the head right below the valve cover on the passenger side. Also check your ground straps on the engine. If they are corroded you could get erratic readings.

What ConCruiser said. In addition, if this is a DDEC V or newer, it is common for the plastic covers on the ECM connections to chaff wires. Take the plastic covers off and look for wires rubbed through. On ours we ground the covers out a bit so they don't pinch the wires so tight.

Yes, it could happen when it gets wet. I haven't seen one break a wire, just rub through the insulation. Bare wires and water don't mix well. If there isn't a problem there, I don't have any other tips other than tracing the wires from the senor to the ECM. This is where software really helps, you can wiggle, spray or do whatever while monitoring the readings looking for fluctuations.

I had an ISX once that when it got washed, it'd only idle and had TPS codes. I hooked it up and slowly started hosing down the engine, when got by the rear of the valve cover, things started to fluctuate. I broke open the harness loom around the back of the valve cover and found several chaffed wires.
