Help! We need some information about the fully electric reefers offered at Truck Transport Refrigeration. They are driven by a generator mounted in place of the alternator that provides 220 3 phase electric while the tractor is running and then it can be plugged in. Any info on these units would be appreciated.

Wouldnt do me anygood I havn't seen any shipers or recivers with plug ins for trailers and doubt I ever will and you have to have your truck running all the time so wheres the savings. I dont think these fully electric reefers will go to far by time they kill a few sets of battries and a couple alt. putting all that extra idle time. About as good as an electric car good for in town but useless in the long haul

I don't think we are talking about the same units. These have a generator system that replaces the alternator on the engine. They are fully electric and yet still supply all the DC required. I have seen two of them but couldn't get to talk to the drivers. As for plugins at stops, I checked with some and they said they were having to put them in or the units can't be run after the truck is parked. Also, along I-5, they are putting in power outlets at rest areas. I just don't want to be left behind if there is a better way than listening to that noisy diesel up there. And, fuel isn't getting any cheaper as far as I am concerned.

i hauled banana's off the pier and thats what they use so when the container is on the boat you just plug them in.......when on land they go on a container chassis that has a generator mounted underneath.....they are a good 3-4000 lbs heavier than a standard reefer trailer and unit......also you will use more fuel because the generator must run all the time so the reefer unit can cycle with temperature

If you have a specialized use that requires and supports these, then it will work. Otherwise I think it's a waste of effort.
Just like 112racing said, there is an efficiency loss in the conversion of mechanical power to electrical power. That loss alone makes this more expensive to operate. I doubt it will achieve widespread acceptance.
Why would others pay costs they can shift to us owner/operators or trucking companies? Check the long history of shifting costs to us.NealinNevada Thanks this.
