Anyone ever thought about running electric fans instead of a clutch fan?

Can't see why not - may need to up rate your alternator.

    Quad fans, like 4 10" ?

What was your reasoning for considering it?

I am a car guy, it was always a way to free up a little hp, and more efficient at cooling and less physical drag on the engine. I just thought it would be a no brainer with the huge ### clutch fans these trucks run.

Electric fans work well in some applications. I am all for finding ways to reduce the load on an engine when you really need power. Nothing like pulling a hard grade at full load and the fan kicks in and sucking the power away. A few things to consider first. Will the flow be push or draw. Engine mounted fans are draw, they pull the air across the cooling coils. Draw system have some advantage over push systems due to not having to work aginst high static pressures. On a push system, you have to consider the static pressure at the front of the cooling stack, and the flow restiction across the stack. In order to overcome these, it may require fans that are just too big to fit into the space available, or the electrical load is well above what could be considered acceptable. Electric fans need energy, has to come from somewhere. Big alternators can be just as high a load on the engine as the stock clutch fan.

Are you kidding. You'll never get electric fans to flow as much cfm as your oem fan. Just not gonna happen . Not to mention it would be a wiring nightmare with the amp load. You'd need an extra alternator just to run them .

    wore out Thanks this.

The biggest issue with it has already been said, getting the flow. I used to switch to electric fans on my car's as well, but it's a huge difference when looking at just how much air flow you'd need for a semi.

Not saying it can't be done as I've never looked into it, but you'd need a good fan

I can see having to have a bigger alternator but think about this. City buses and large RV's all electric fan systems. They made them work in there. They use a system where one fan would come one and another as needed and so forth until all of them are on. The other item in the summer time that adds to a lot of fan on time is the ac system. I so far have seen a few trucks with the AC condenser mounted to the back of the cab with an electric fan cooling it. If you can take that heat away from your radiator and front of engine the real fan on time will be greatly reduced. I am not against trying electric fans on trucks and I believe that you will see them in the future.

The fan on the back of the cab is probably the APU condenser, much smaller system.
