May be a stupid question to some. But I live by the code “the only stupid question is the one not asked, cause it’s dumb to assume or go without knowing”
so I have a series 60 and was looking at getting a glider for it. I’m in school now for my cdl. Going to run for a mega carrier for a few year to gain otr experience. And after will be going to landstar. I was just wondering if an eld can be installed with the use of a series 60 it if I will have to get a new engine and delete a bunch of crap off of it. Thanks ahead of time.

My understanding is the truck has to be a glider truck. The VIN has to glider from the factory. Then you can put any engine in you want. Well you would want the same engine the truck was wired for from the factory. Then you have the problem of leasing a truck without ELD onto a company. Like Landstar, I don't think they will take on a truck without ELD. You would have call them or any company. Because you will be running under their authority, they set the rules. They might not want to take the risk of someone running paper logs.. They are required to check your logs and keep 6 month of them on file. So they might not want to deal with paper logs anymore.
rachi Thanks this. -
As old school as I am, I say screw the regs, but that's not the wave of the future. I predict, ALL trucks will need some sort of ELD. Right now, everyones rushing to have a pre-emission trucks and no ELD, well, that's going to come to a screeching halt. Companies, like Landstar, have huge insurance commitments and if you want to truck in the future, you'll have to comply. The insurance companies rule the roost today. I don't mean to discourage you but if you want to feed into that, by all means have at it.

All this guy is asking if a ELD can go to a older 60 series, yes it can I have seen older trucks have a a ELD in them.

I've asked around about this same thing.. as long as the truck has an ECM, an eld will work in it is the general consensus I got.

Thanks to all who replied. I can do paper logs because as a child my grandfather would forget we were coming up on a scale and I had to do some creative logging. But when it comes the new stuff I’m lost. Last week we started driving and it’s more complicated than it used to be that’s for sure. But anyway, the current truck I actually own will not an eld as it’s all mechanical. And tbh I would want to drive it otr today. But I hope to share my progress as this dream grows with you guys.

Well if you're going to do anything for a mega and then lease on to someplace like Landstar you will have to have something that can use an ELD.
There are some places I've heard they can lease you on with a mechanical truck but I wouldn't even know where to begin.
But if you have your Authority, a mechanical engine is no problem.
I have a mechanical engine and I run paper Logs with my authority and I couldn't be happier with that engine and the truck.
Not interested in the least in anything electronic.aaronpeterbilt3787, 650cat425, blairandgretchen and 1 other person Thank this.
