Spray, soak and rinse with warm water. Lightly blow dry with compressed air.
Just like your oven.......... heavy buildup make take a few rounds.magoo68 Thanks this. -
Cummins recommends regular carb cleaner.

We also stock this stuff for cooler flushes. It works well and is a water based soap. Very caustic stuff but it works swell.

If its sticking, try backing off the 10mm bolt on the EGR and flip it aside ( the teardrop cover plate on the EGR )
A small ( stubby) flat head screw driver put to the EGR valve butt end under that cover ( there's a slot for which to stick flat head onto) and try moving the valve. Should move freely from stop to stop without force. If its tight, Detroit will say " replace it" but spray the ( beep) out of it with a high heat resistant lubricant.
Try moving it again...
Finger tip pressure is a good way to gage it's free movement ( and don't worry where its positioned after toying with it, the EGR will find its proper position via air pressure from the VPOD, etc...)
Using a screw driver tip on a 1/4" socket/ ratchet to access it more easily will help tons, while you keep spraying it to free it up.
Next, spend the $125 at Diesel Power solutions, and install a EGR delete onto the barometric pressure sensor ( looks like a USB stick)
I did, my coolant runs 25-28 degrees cooler, no more black oil, cleaner engine, smoother acceleration & MPG is up a very conservative 0.8 MPG all day, every day.
