I checked into the price for replacing at TEC in Fontana CA...quoted $635 labour ($127 an hour) plus cost of the egr valve which is $1080.25 incl the clamp kit. So that's $1712.25 plus taxes. However, they also wanted to charge an additional $254 for extra diagnostic work prior to replacing the EGR valve just to be sure it was the valve and not something else, ie ecm.

I'd have told them that they could do the additional diagnostics at their own expense. Actually, I'd have told them to stuff their $127/hour labor rate and I'd find another shop that's got a realistic rate.

The shop I use in NC is $69/hour.

Yep, my shop charges me $70 per hour, and they had it done in 3 hrs. I guess when they sell you a Volvo dealership license, they tell you that you can rape and pillage as much as you want cause you have a "captive" crowd....where else are people gonna take thier trucks? I SAY VOLVO CAN SUCK IT!!!!

Volvo dealers got labor time standards from Volvo Trucks. What to do in what time to use. They got recomended for every country hour price.

Here in the US that's known as 'flat rate'. Manufacturers publish a 'flat rate manual' that lists the amount of time that it should take to replace virtually any part on the vehicle. These manuals are primarily used for reimbursing dealerships for warranty work, but are also used to standardize how customers are charged for out of warranty work.

For example, if Volvo (or any other manufacturer) says that it takes 5 hours to remove and replace a water pump, then the shop will charge 5 hours of labor for the job - even if the tech can get it done in 2 hours by skipping some procedures to save time. Some shops will add flat rate charges together. Say you're getting the water pump replaced, and you tell them to replace the belts as well. The time for removing and replacing the belts is included in the time listed to replace the water pump, since they have to be removed to do that job. Some dealers will charge the 5 hours for the water pump, PLUS add the time for removing and replacing just the belts (1 hour or so), because you asked them to put new belts on. So you end up paying for 6 hours of labor when you should have been charged for 5, and you don't even realize that you've been taken advantage of.

You really need to watch these shops; they can and will take advantage of you if you don't know how the system works.

I like to be a source of good news but you could've gone this way

    http://illinoisdynocenter.org/Volvo..._d15_d16_power_mileage_chip_box_tuning_module

You could've had the EGR valves in question turned off completely never open up again, and gain a little more horsepower and fuel economy at the same time.
