Wells Fargo? I once got paid with a Wells Fargo business check, a small amount, and stopped by the bank to cash it. They were busy and I waited through one of the lines. When I got to the teller and asked to cash this check I was asked for my account number. Explained I did not have an account and was directed to another line.
Went and waited in that line. They took my check and what info they wanted and counted out the cash. WHOA! Where is the check? What is the amount? It was 5 or 10 dollars short and I must have got a little loud. You are short changing me! No: You do not have an account so there is a fee for cashing checks. YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOU ARE CHARGING TO CASH A CHECK WRITTEN BY ONE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS AT YOUR BANK? Yes: Because you do not have an account. If you do not want to pay a fee you need to open an account here or cash it at your own bank. I through the money on the counter and demanded: I W I L L! G I V E M E M Y C H E C K B A C K !!!!! They all started scampering around like I was trying to scam them and counted the money about five times. I will never set foot back in one of their banks.
As to these this types of certified checks some are reluctant due to lack of knowledge and others because they have been screwed.
One example is a company that got bogus conformation and or authorization numbers. Do not know how but it happened.
My local bank stopped accepting any of these type checks, even for deposit, if they did not call and get the conformation number. We would not release the vehicle if we did not get the conformation number and the bank was often closed at that time. We made an agreement that they were not liable if they did not get the conformation number.
This is out dated by now as some people can take a picture of their paycheck and deposit in their account.
Hope that explained it a bit.WesternPlains Thanks this. -
Sad thing is in my experience that's simply any bank. I had an experience almost exactly the same trying to cash a check at Fifth Third bank. I refuse to set foot in any bank ever. I'm quite happy with my credit unions.

Efs checks are drawn on Wells Fargo. I've has zero problem both cashing or depositing them there, even at a branch not really near truck trafficed areas. They just did the call in on the check.
I do though have my accounts there so that may be helping things. -
