Hello to all. I'm wondering would anyone know anything about the ECM going bad. I have a Cummins ISX 15. To help you understand, let me start off by saying my truck was stolen back in September. It took a month for freightliner to replace things that were damaged or missing i.e. Wheels, tires, etc. After completing that, the I came to get my truck, once I got it started, I had engine lights come on that wasn't on before. In particular, the engine light that literally says CHECK. The body shop sent it over to service and they came back with the EGR cooler, ECM, and a samcab gone bad. My truck was to be ready on last Friday. I got a call from them stating that they found an ATD Harness that connect from the DPF to the fuel recirculate system burnt from touching the DPF. My question is, could that harness have anything to do with them saying the ECM was bad? And did I just get charged $8,000 for something that could've been done for $500? Thanks

I would say no due to the fact that the after treatment harness goes straight to the after treatment control module. The ACM monitors the dpf and its sensors and reports to the ecm. It is connected via the chassis harness. I have seen a rash of bad Cummins ECM's as of late. Due to internal shorts. I don't know what your original codes were for and troubleshooting procedure used but I will say it's not uncommon for the fault to be identified as the ECM.

OK. I know some of the codes were injector solenoid. I just found it odd that after they finished the work, they found this harness damaged. I was thinking maybe anything electrical could cause a fault for something with the ECM. Thanks for the reply.

In my experience, when an ECM fails you could have anything from dozens of fault codes, to an engine that won't run or runs like crap. ECM failures are relatively rare but they do happen. In most cases it is usually the wiring or a faulty sensor.

Mechanics are not mechanics these days, they only trouble shoot and look by codes. It does not surprise me that they did not catch this until the computer told them to look.
