Is 230* too hot? If it matters its a RTLO18913 in a freightliner coronado. My thought is the trans cooler is on its way out. It's the type that flows coolant through. Any thoughts ?

how hot was it outside and were you running heavy in hills? if the water cooled trans cooler was going out, one of two things either you would be getting antifreeze in the trans grease. or you would have a major leak around the cooler either grease or coolant. it could be getting pluged up but thats unlikely. 230 isnt that bad if you were pulling in hills on a hot day. i switched to an air cooler for my trans and the hottest it will get is about 180deg. on a heavy load pulling in the hills. i will say what an old timer said to me long ago. to fix that problem unplug the dang guage and problem solved!

Trans cooler took a crap today. Lost coolant and had gear oil in the coolant reservoir. I knew something was wrong lol

Been there got the t-shirt. Get rid of the water cooled setup and go with air cooled. Cheaper and more reliable. Mine seldom ever goes over 200* anymore. On hot days with ambient temps of 100* and heavy loads in hills and mountains it might get up to 225*. That is when I pull over for 20 minutes and let it cool back down. For the most part I never see those temps though. What I blame for seeing it get that hot on occasion is the fact my T600 is an aero truck and the air just does not flow well enough underneath it to properly cool the trans. Nobody I know with a W900 or 379 ever has high trans temps hauling normal 80K gvw loads.. Another drawback to the wonderful aero trucks. I'll trade longevity and performance for a little fuel mileage any day of the week that's why my next truck will be a hood...

I have no cooler at all and see temps over 250 degrees on a typical basis. Apparently according to TruckPro, they stated it's normal. I don't believe so but they're the ones who took the oil cooler off.

I get freaked out when mine reaches 190°. On hot days loaded to max legal weight , it runs right at 180° When it's cooler outside, 150° maybe 160°

It was drilled into me during my HD mechanic apprenticeship that any time the oil temperature exceeds 250 degrees Farenheit, you've cooked the oil and are damaging components. I believe for every 10 degrees above 140F you've doubled the oxidization rate of the oil (essentially halving the life of the oil).
