Going to rebuild my RTLO18718B, should start by saying im a trucker by day and a grease monkey by night, and have a very well equipped shop, i've read the manual and feel confident in tackling this, just wondering from guys that have actually rebuilt these, what special service tools are ACTUALLY required, things like the counter shaft bearing puller, from looks of the manual a guy should just be able to use a standard 3 jaw puller?

The newest book I have is for a 12513 so maybe I should be asking you however I have never seen a three jaw puller work. I have used a torch, heat the inner race orange, turn the head pull the handle and flow the hotter race material away from the shift. A puller with a jack screw? Has a bolt to tighten the jaws toward each other with a loop in the middle of it. Use a cutting wheel to grind notches a the inner race 180 apart and pull it off. Have seen the race cut with a cut off disc 95% of the way to the shaft at a (45 degree?) angle and a chisel driven in the to split it open. I could not do that. Went to my wood working buddy and cut blocks for the counter shaft out of a 2x4. It can be difficult to install back boxes with tapered bearings at all and in time is more difficult. You can stand the main box up on blocks on the bell housing, hang the back box off the yoke and drop it in. If I am not confused the hole in the back of the counter shaft is LH 5/8 threads. Buy some LH 5/8 wheel studs. Use washers from the front of a 9 series trans or make them from 1/4 in. plate. Weld them to the old outer races, drop larger nuts over the head of the studs and weld them in the center. Do the welding installed on a counter shaft to keep them straight. Then they can be screwed into back of the counter shaft and will hold them up even to install the box with trans in truck. Hope that helped good luck.

Cetane+: You are obviously knowledgeable and respected. He said he had a well equipped shop which I thought would include those. How do you remove inner races from counter shaft bearings?
