I have the RTLO 18918b in the truck currently and the rear box needs to be rebuilt. I have a RTLO 16918b in the shop that is a core. My question is can I take the rear box of the 16918b, rebuild it and install it on the 18918b to minimize the downtime. I'm not sure what the difference is other than the rated capacity.

    Thanks

Its going to be a one day difference to just rebuild the rear case on the one you have. If its the same out put shaft its possible, the one that comes out of the front half that the sliding clutch slides on. What is wrong with yours? It takes an hour to replace what ever you need to do in the rear case. It will just be tricky trying to remove the two races without getting anything in the front.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is in slipping out of the high side gears (overdrive). It would nice to have one ready to go. I just know if I take the rear box off to rebuild the original something would go wrong like wrong parts or something then I would be down a week or better.

Have you made sure its not the piston, splitter valve, and air supply problem?

#4300907 SLIDING CLUTCH is the same for both transmissions, so the switch should work. Also, all the parts in the rear box look to be the exact same part numbers for both the 189 and 186. Since you have that other trans, get the bearings for the rear shafts, the K-3480 REPL KIT - DRIVE GEAR (replaced part #4300938 ), piston orings, and gaskets. Then rebuild all the rear box while its out. Then you will have a reman box to put on the running trans.
