i drive a freightliner m2 straight truck with an Eaton Fuller 6 speed. I’m sure this is a common knowledge question but I just got my class b and don’t know much about these transmissions. Sometimes, if I’m at an extra long light or waiting on a train or somethjng I will put it into neutral so I don’t have to sit there holding the clutch forever. If I push the clutch back in and go into 2nd ( I don’t use first unless I’m on a hill or have a heavy load ) it will grind. But, if I hold the clutch for 30 seconds before I shift it will be smoothe. Why is this?

It takes a few seconds for the input shaft to stop turning once you push the clutch in. Are you pushing the clutch all the way to the floor when doing this? If not try that as you may not be hitting the clutch brake which is designed to help slow the input shaft. But only use the clutch break when you are starting off and not on every shift (if not floating the gears) as you will wear out the clutch brake very quickly.

Can you elaborate on what a clutch brake is? Tomorrow I’ll take notice and make sure I’m pushing it all the way. I don’t float them as I’ve been told I can screw up the tranny floating them since it’s synchronized.

You are correct on the trans being scync'd after I looked it up.
The clutch brake in the dark disk around the input shaft in this picture. When you push the clutch all the way in the clutch fork contacts the clutch brake and stops the input shaft. Just like the brakes do for the wheel. Only use the clutch brake when first putting the transmission into gear. If you are pushing the clutch in all the way and it still taking a while for the input shaft to stop the clutch brake may need to be brought back into adjustment or if worn out enough it might need replacement. Might bring it up to the company mechanics.Attached Files:

Ok I see. I’ll definitely have to check it out. Thanks a lot.

6 speed doesn't use a clutch brake. Nature of the beast, just have to be patient and wait.
Adjust per Eaton specs and make sure the linkage is in good shape and the clutch is achieving full release.BreakOnThrough and Chrontar Thank this.
