There are none other than speed limits and bridge laws. Everything else is uniformed.

Not exactly true, you are oversimplifying it Ridgeline. You usually do better than that!

Yes, for the sake of interstate commerce most laws are uniform or the Federal regulations take control, although axle and gross weight limits including bridge (axle spacing), length/height and other things do vary from state to state. These may not be important to a dry van hauler, although bridge is, but to open deck knowing 14 foot it legal in many western states can help.

Some states also require weight distance permits, liquor permits and such to operate in or through their state.

The front pages of the Rand McNally motor carrier atlas is your simplest resource. Now to dig deeper into the detailed differences JJ Keller publishes a state guide for compliance specialists, my copy is about 800 pages thick and covers everything from nuiances of the licensing and registration process to which states exempt local operations from what regulations.

Example of crazy local rules, Arizona exempts tow trucks not requiring a CDL from hours of service, Pennsylvania does not require a medical card until 17,001 pounds or more gross vehicle weight rating and more.

Keep your seatbelt on and obey the speed limits.

Oregon and New Mexico are toll states and require trip permits or quarterly accounts be cheaper. I"m not sure on the eastern side.

California is the only kingpin state on the west. I forget my math but I think the number is 10 on the east.

Idaho requires a permit for 53's if leaving the interstate. So you might check for legal truck route and possible permit if you need to go through some town somewhere.

Yeah your right but here is the thing I read into the question ... what is required to drive in different states.

For the most part, speedlimits and bridge laws.

    That's it to me, simple.

Taking a 53' trailer across country as a driver seems to be easier than it was in 1979.

But your info is better than mine.

And even this shows what is wrong with publishing information. It's outdated. For example in MI, as of May 22, 2018 there is no KPRA restrictions....

Just razzing you my friend. It does get tiring giving detailed answers when the simple may do just as well. So few really are interested in knowing the details of industry regulation.
