I have been over loveland pass a few times, It is scary as hell even when the road is dry. But I am wondering who was the rocket scientist that made hazzardous materials go this route. I know its state of colorado but who thought that sending explosives radioactivity up this hill would be safer than using a bypass.
any opinions or thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't think they picked that route because it was safer, but because it avoided the Eisenhower tunnel, so nothing went kaboom inside and launched a bunch of 4 wheelers down the hill!

I undersrtand the tunnel aspect. but to send stuff over that pass is ridiculous... There are ways around I have seen drivers go out of the way to not go on there

EVERYTHING used to go over Loveland Pass.... I used to run it just for grins... there are far worse ones in Colorado and trucks use those everyday, too.
I'm still chuckling over the guys that call the tunnel "Vail Pass".... -
Bypass, eh? Isn't that what Texas is for?
You could take CO131 and US40 via Kremmling and Grandby... oh but you'd probably soil your panties on Berthoud Pass!
Or... you could take US50 through Delta, Montrose and Gunnison... but darn! There's that pesky Monarch Pass. That'd definitely be pee your pants time!
Either way, you'd be another day on the road, especially with the laundry problem. Hmmm.... does Loveland sound so bad now? There is more real estate above 14,000' in Colorado than anywhere else in the lower 48. Perhaps you should visit Wyoming... just Elk Mountain up there.

it just doesnt make sense to send hazmat up that way, but since the tunnel is there it is really the only other way. Its a nice view up at the top and the scenery is nice
