I am a new owner operator. Don't use drugs. Passing a test not a concern.
I was told I need to be part of a drug testing consortium. I signed up for one and took and passed the "pre-employment" screen. They said I can be randomly selected at any time for additional tests and that they mail me a notice to take them. How does this work regarding timelines to take the test?
I know there are testing centers all over the US but I am often on the road 2-3 weeks at a time. What happens if they mail me a notice and I don't get it until I get home 3 weeks after they sent it? Isn't there a certain timeframe in which you have to take the tests?
I also travel out of the country occasionally. What if I get selected for a test and I am in south America?

Mine sends a letter and email at the same time. I call in, tell them where I am, they pick a location.

Why not call the consortium that you are paying an get the rules straight. Not compling is just as bad as a dirty test.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
Im sure they know truckers occasionally stay out a few days and have contracted wizz-a-toriums all over the place for you to go..
Id be lookin for the small print on that stuff buddy...and looking for other options..
Find out how often you need to test, so if something goes wrong with the consortium you selected, you could probably hit a hospital/urgent care/known testers and just get one done...so if some crap comes up, your covered..
Scary man, I dont like it, one clerical error? cant have it -

I think Nastc has a program where they train someone at your company to do randoms. When the driver's name comes up, your drug testing person has a few weeks to bring them to the terminal or have it done on the road.
Doing that would at least let you finish a load before peeing in a cup. -
Hi Bdog, from what I've heard , these "consortiums" are huge and sometimes have thousands of enrollee's, and I knew O/O's that never got called. I think if you are out of the country, maybe there's a clause for that, but more likely, it's a world wide deal, and if your # is picked, you have 2 hours(?) to find a facility. I'd think being an O/O would give you certain advantages over say a small company driver, that may get picked 3 or 4 times a year. I wouldn't sweat it

DOT consortiums must randomly test at least 50% of their pool each year. Some drivers could go 5 years without a test, but it's like flipping heads 5 times in a row (3% chance)

As soon as you receive & read your notice: call them, go to their screen site. (Myself, living on my own, rcvd notice after I departed for my long trek, returned home (much later) & read their notice, call them, they directed me to a screening site)
...ur not the first to find this problem, wont be the last -
