As another said, it depends on the number of stops. I had a dedicated route of the shipper had two trailers to load at night for one driver since there was two loads each day. When we had two drivers, that was doubled. My company would not allow extras to sit around.
At the delivery end, there were two locations depending on the the broker order each day. So when I was the only one driving, I wanted at least one MT at each receiver to return with. But when my trailers were not ready for the drop n hook, things got screwed. I either did a live unload or went a mile to the other receiver. Where that would not be MT either and I spent the night, which screwed up the flow. Broker would either cancel the 10th load or I got home Saturday morning. Some times, I would get back late, put the MT in a dock n go to sleep or wait for it to be live loaded, then swap out the trailer with the other MT. Then go to sleep. PPwork ready in the morning.
So at least 1 at shipper, 1 in transient, and 1 at the receiver per driver.

customer contract will typically call for X number of power units/drivers and Y number of trailers. OTR companies will try to satisfy the contract with fewer dedicated units and the difference made up by nearby OTR trucks/drivers/trailers. That's how the dedicated accounts are often underbid below the current account company.
